Portsmouth is a small Ohio River city of about 18,000 people, the seat of Scioto County, roughly 1 h 45 min south of Columbus on US-23 and 1 h 45 min east of Cincinnati on US-52. Its draw is a compact historic downtown, a 2,200-foot painted floodwall along the river, and Shawnee State Forest and Shawnee State Park just west. There is no city bus network, so a car makes the trip easier; downtown itself is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end.

Getting around

No public transit in the city; a few taxi companies cover it, and rideshare is thin — book ahead, especially for the Amtrak station across the river. Downtown is walkable: the floodwall, Southern Ohio Museum, Boneyfiddle shops and the riverfront sit within about 1.5 km of each other. A car is needed for Shawnee State Forest, the airport and the Kentucky side.

Safety

Portsmouth is a small city with a normal US small-city risk profile: downtown and the riverfront are fine on foot in daylight, but avoid walking alone after dark away from the lit Boneyfiddle and Chillicothe Street blocks, and lock the car.
  • The Amtrak station is in South Shore, Kentucky, across the river, with no bus or taxi waiting: arrange a ride before you arrive.
  • US-52 along the river floods in heavy rain; check road conditions before driving it in winter or spring.
  • Downtown empties after about 21:00 on weeknights; plan dinner before then or drive to the north side.
  • Summer heat and humidity along the river valley are worse than the temperature suggests; carry water on the floodwall walk.
