Hong Kong and Macau count as separate regions; check whether your ticket qualifies.
  • China ↗Foreign visitors must register their address with the police within 24 hours; hotels do it at check-in with your passport. Carry the original passport at all times: hotels, trains, museums, Tiananmen Square and police checks ask for it.
  • China ↗Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card before you fly. QR payment is the default in shops, taxis and many stalls, and some places refuse cash or a foreign card. Carry cash as a backup.
  • China ↗Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and many news sites are blocked. Use an eSIM with roaming (it routes through your home network) or install and test a VPN before you fly; VPN sites and app stores are hard to reach inside China, and only government-approved VPNs are officially permitted.

Pingyao is a walled Ming and Qing town of about 2.6 km², car-free in the centre and still mostly visited by mainland Chinese travellers. Two nights covers the wall, the banking museums and one temple outside the walls; a third night only pays off if you add a merchant compound. It works as a stop between Xi'an and Beijing or as a side trip from Taiyuan.

Getting around

Walk. The walled town is roughly 1.6 km across and cars are barred from most lanes. Golf carts run short hops for about ¥5 per person or ¥15 for four; bikes rent for around ¥10 a day. Taxis and buses connect the new station and the outlying temples.

Watch out

Safety

Pingyao is a safe, small town; the real risks are taxi overcharging at the station, pickpockets in the busiest lanes and summer heat.
  • Taxis outside Pingyao Gucheng station often refuse the meter and quote high: agree the price or use the bus.
  • The ¥125 (≈ US$18) common ticket covers about 20 sights for three days; the wall and temples outside town are separate.
  • Shuanglin and Zhenguo temples are outside the walls and need their own transport and entry fee.
  • Summer is hot and the main lanes are packed; go out early.
  • Book rail seats ahead around holidays, when Taiyuan connections sell out.
