Pingyao is a walled Ming and Qing town of about 2.6 km², car-free in the centre and still mostly visited by mainland Chinese travellers. Two nights covers the wall, the banking museums and one temple outside the walls; a third night only pays off if you add a merchant compound. It works as a stop between Xi'an and Beijing or as a side trip from Taiyuan.

Scams and watch-outs
- Taxis outside Pingyao Gucheng station often refuse the meter and quote high: agree the price or use the bus.
- The ¥125 common ticket covers about 20 sights for three days; the wall and temples outside town are separate.
- Shuanglin and Zhenguo temples are outside the walls and need their own transport and entry fee.
- Summer is hot and the main lanes are packed; go out early.
- Book rail seats ahead around holidays, when Taiyuan connections sell out.
Pingyao is a safe, small town; the real risks are taxi overcharging at the station, pickpockets in the busiest lanes and summer heat.
