Base on the Caltrain line if you want a quieter, cheaper-feeling stop than San Francisco and can reach the coast by car; otherwise sleep in the city.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
- California ↗Agricultural inspection stations sit on major road entrances into the state; you may be asked about farm visits and fresh produce.
- California ↗Outside San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego cores, a rental car is effectively required; book it before you land.
- Bay Area ↗Clipper is the default transit card: tap on BART, Caltrain, Muni, ferries and most buses.
- Bay Area ↗Bridge tolls are charged one-way (into San Francisco and on most crossings); plan loops to cross in the free direction.
The Peninsula is the strip of San Mateo County between San Francisco and Silicon Valley: two coasts, one commuter rail line, and about 30% of the land left as open space. It is not a sightseeing destination in itself. Base here if you want a mid-priced stop on Caltrain with SFO on the doorstep and you have a car (or accept rideshare) for the coast and the redwood parks; if your trip is city sights and no car, San Francisco is the better base. Pick a town on Caltrain, then day-trip north and south by train, and west only with wheels.

Night sequences
- 2 nights
- San Mateo or Burlingame 2; one day San Francisco by Caltrain, one day coast by car
- 3 nights
- Burlingame 2 + Half Moon Bay 1 if you want the coast at dawn
- 4 nights
- San Mateo 2 + Redwood City 1 + Half Moon Bay 1, with a Stanford/Palo Alto half-day
- US-101 is slow in both directions at rush hour; I-280 is longer on paper but usually faster between San Francisco and Palo Alto.
- Coast fog can sit over Half Moon Bay until noon in summer while the bay side is sunny — plan the coast for the afternoon.
- Most Peninsula towns are car-oriented outside their small downtowns; check the walk from your hotel to the station before booking.
Day-trips door to door

|---|---|---|---|---|
| San Francisco | San Mateo | 45 min | ~1 AM (10 PM Sun) | About 30 minutes by Caltrain to 4th & King, then add a Muni ride or a 25-minute walk to reach downtown — budget 45 minutes or more door to door. SamTrans 397 runs late-night service between San Francisco and Palo Alto along the El Camino corridor; check its current schedule. |
| Half Moon Bay | San Mateo | 40 min | unknown | Highway 92 over the ridge; no train, so a car or rideshare is required. Weekend traffic on 92 backs up from mid-morning. |
| Palo Alto / Stanford | Redwood City | 25 min | ~1 AM (10 PM Sun) | Caltrain to Palo Alto then a campus shuttle or 25-minute walk to the Main Quad. |
| San Jose | San Mateo | 70 min | ~1 AM (10 PM Sun) | Caltrain express; the local stopping service takes about twice as long. |
Bags between cities
No luggage forwarding on the Peninsula; many hotels hold bags on checkout day — ask before booking. Left-luggage options at SFO: check.
