Outback South Australia is the state's arid north: the Flinders Ranges, the sealed run to Lyndhurst and Marree, and the opal town of Coober Pedy beyond. There is almost no public transport past Port Augusta, so the region rewards drivers with time. Most visitors should stop at Wilpena Pound and the Flinders; the Oodnadatta and Birdsville Tracks are a separate, serious trip with fuel, water and recovery planning.
