South Australia is one city plus a ring of short add-ons. Adelaide holds 80% of the state's 1.7 million people and most of what a first trip wants: wine valleys 45–75 minutes out, coast and wildlife within a day. Kangaroo Island is the one place worth sleeping on. The far north and west are long drives with few services — treat them as a separate trip, not a detour.
