Best day trips from Ottawa: how to get there and what to see

Distances below are road distances from downtown Ottawa and are approximate. Train times are scheduled times, not door-to-door; add taxi or bus time at each end.

The closest real escape: a federal park across the river in Quebec, 20–30 minutes from downtown by car. The Gatineau Parkway is closed to cars on some weekend mornings in summer, which makes it a cycling and walking route; check the current closure calendar before you go.

In summer, hike to one of the lookouts, swim at a supervised beach, or rent a canoe. In autumn the same trails are the reason people come. In winter, cross-country ski and snowshoe trails replace the hiking routes.

You need a car for most trailheads, though some shuttle and transit options exist in peak season. Parking at popular lots fills by mid-morning on weekends.

Perth is a small town on the Tay River with a stone-built main street, a park by the water and a couple of museums. It is about an hour by car. You can also take the train to Smiths Falls and continue by taxi, but that adds cost and time.

Smiths Falls sits on the Rideau Canal and is the better no-car choice: VIA Rail stops in town, about an hour from Ottawa. The canal locks, the railway museum and the waterfront are all walkable from the station area. Both towns work as a half day if you leave early, or a relaxed full day.

Combine them only if you are driving; the two are about 30 minutes apart by road.

Kingston is the biggest genuine day trip from Ottawa: an old limestone waterfront city about two hours away by car or train. The train drops you near the waterfront, so you can walk the old town, the market square and the harbour without a car.

Fort Henry and the Penitentiary Museum are the main paid sights; both need a few hours. In summer, boat tours leave from the harbour. A full day is tight but workable if you take an early train and a late one back.

This is the point where a day trip starts to feel rushed. If you want to see Kingston properly, stay a night.

Montebello is a village about 1 h 15 min east by car, known for a large resort and a wildlife park where you drive or walk through animal enclosures. It suits families and anyone who wants a low-effort day out of the city.

If you have no car, the simplest option is a boat cruise on the Ottawa River leaving from downtown. Cruises run in the warmer months and last one to three hours depending on the route. Check the season start and end dates, because the boats do not run year-round.

Fuel is the main cost for car trips. A round trip to Perth or Smiths Falls is roughly 200 km; to Kingston roughly 360 km. At 2026 pump prices, budget about CAD 25–45 for the shorter loops and CAD 45–70 for Kingston, depending on your car.

Train fares on the Ottawa–Kingston corridor vary a lot by how early you book and by fare type. Booking a week or more ahead usually costs less than buying on the day. Cruises and museum entries are separate.

Start early. The 417 and the bridges to Gatineau back up on summer weekends, and parking at trailheads and waterfronts fills fast.

Check the season before you commit. Some attractions and boat cruises close outside summer, and winter turns the same routes into ski and skate trips.

If you are relying on the train, book a return that leaves you a buffer. A missed evening train means an expensive taxi or an unplanned hotel night.
