Ottawa airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Ottawa's airport sits about 10 km south of the city centre, so every option is short. The choice comes down to cost against door-to-door time, and whether you are arriving after the buses thin out.

The taxi rank is outside the arrivals level; a dispatcher or queue system usually applies. Fares are metered, and the run to downtown Ottawa is commonly quoted at CAD 35–45 depending on traffic and the exact address. A flat-rate zone system may apply — confirm before you get in. Tipping follows the Canadian norm of 10–15%.

Rideshare pick-up points are signed and separate from the taxi rank; follow the app's instructions rather than waiting at the curb. At peak times, surge pricing can push a rideshare above the taxi fare, so it is worth checking both.

If you are heading to Gatineau, across the river in Québec, expect a higher fare and confirm the driver will cross the provincial boundary.

OC Transpo route 97 connects the airport with downtown Ottawa, running along the Transitway corridor toward the Rideau Centre and Parliament area. The trip takes roughly 30–45 minutes depending on traffic, and the fare is about CAD 4 — the cheapest way in.

Buses run roughly every 15–30 minutes during the day, with less frequent service in the evening, on Sundays and on statutory holidays. If you land after about 23:00, plan on a taxi or rideshare instead.

Pay with a Presto card, a Presto ticket, or exact cash; drivers do not give change. Contactless card and phone tap is being rolled out across the system — check before you rely on it. Your ticket is valid for a set transfer window, so keep it if you continue by bus or O-Train.

Rental desks are in the terminal or a short walk away. A car makes sense if you are heading to the Ottawa Valley, Perth or Smiths Falls, but downtown parking runs CAD 20–40 a night, which often outweighs the rental saving for a city-only trip.

Some airport-area and downtown hotels run courtesy shuttles; ask when you book, since schedules are often limited to certain hours. Ride-hail and taxi remain the fallback outside those windows.

For one person with light luggage, the bus is about CAD 4 and a taxi about CAD 35–45. For two or more travellers, the taxi or rideshare is usually cheaper per person than two bus fares plus the hassle, and it drops you at the door.

Budget roughly CAD 40–50 door to door by taxi including a tip, or CAD 4–8 by bus. Winter weather can add time rather than money, though heavy snow can slow the meter.

Allow extra time in winter: Ottawa gets heavy snow and ice, and both road and bus times stretch. If you have a tight connection, take a taxi.

Keep small change or a Presto card ready if you plan to use the bus; the driver cannot break large notes. Downtown Ottawa is walkable once you arrive, so you may not need a car at all.

For onward trips, VIA Rail's Ottawa station is east of downtown and reached by bus or taxi, not from the airport directly. If you are continuing to Toronto or Montréal by train, build in a transfer across town.
