Where to stay in Ottawa: best neighborhoods and hotels

Stay downtown if this is your first visit. The block between Elgin Street and Bank Street, plus the ByWard Market just north-east of it, puts Parliament Hill, the Rideau Canal, the National Gallery and the main museums inside a 20-minute walk. You pay more per night but you save on taxis and time.

Pick the ByWard Market if you want restaurants and bars at the door and do not mind some evening noise. Pick the Glebe if you want a residential street, a farmers' market and a 25–30 minute walk or short bus ride into the core. Stay near the airport only if you have an early flight and no interest in the sights.

ByWard Market is the densest cluster of hotels, hostels, cafés and bars in the city, a few minutes north-east of Parliament Hill. It is the easiest base for a short trip and the loudest one on a summer weekend. Rooms facing the market square get street noise; ask for a higher floor or a courtyard side.

The downtown core around Elgin Street and Bank Street is the calm, central alternative: government buildings, the National Arts Centre, the canal and most major museums within walking distance. Elgin Street itself has a long row of restaurants. This is the safest pick if you are travelling with children or on business.

The Glebe sits south of the canal along Bank Street. It is residential, with a farmers' market, independent shops and Lansdowne Park. You trade a 25–35 minute walk to the Hill for quieter nights and often lower rates. Centretown, between the core and the Glebe, is the value option: plain apartment-style hotels and longer-stay rooms, still walkable to everything.

Near the airport, south of the city, hotels are cheaper and aimed at drivers and early departures. There is little to see on foot, and you will need a car, taxi or the bus for every trip into town.

Ottawa is cheaper than Toronto or Vancouver for the same standard of room. A clean mid-range double downtown usually runs CAD 180–280 before tax in the shoulder season, and more during tulip season, Canada Day and university graduation weeks. Hostel dorm beds sit around CAD 45–75. Apartment rentals can beat hotels for stays of four nights or more, especially in Centretown and the Glebe.

Ontario adds HST at checkout, so the final bill is higher than the advertised rate. Tipping is expected at 15–20% in restaurants and bars.

Ottawa's sights are close together, so the area you choose matters more than the hotel. If you plan to use public transport, check whether your hotel is near a Transitway or O-Train stop before booking; the system is useful but not dense everywhere.

Winter changes the maths: in January and February, a hotel connected to the underground walkway network or within a block of the canal skateway is worth a premium. In summer, a place with air conditioning matters more than a view. If you are continuing to Perth, Smiths Falls or the Ottawa Valley, a hotel with parking on the city's west or south edge can save you a slow morning drive.
