Ottawa itinerary: 1, 2 and 3 days

Two days is the right length for most visitors. Day one is Parliament Hill, the Rideau Canal and ByWard Market; day two adds one national museum and the Glebe or Gatineau Park. One day works if you keep to the core and skip museums. A third day only pays off if you want a second museum, the Canadian War Museum, or a drive out to Perth or Smiths Falls.

Ottawa is a government city, so the rhythm matters: Parliament tours and museum hours set the schedule, and the canal is the spine you walk along. Book Parliament tours ahead in summer, and check whether the canal is skatable or a walking path depending on the month.

Pick the row that matches your time and budget. Prices are 2026 estimates in Canadian dollars; museum admission varies by site and season, so treat the figures as a band.

Start at Parliament Hill in the morning. The grounds are free to walk, the views over the Ottawa River are the city's best free sight, and guided tours of the Centre Block run through the day in season; book online ahead because slots fill in summer. Allow 1.5–2 hours.

Walk west along the Rideau Canal to the National Arts Centre and cross into ByWard Market for lunch. The market is a few blocks of stalls, cafés and restaurants, busiest at midday. After lunch, pick one museum: the National Gallery of Canada on Sussex Drive, or the Canadian Museum of History across the river in Gatineau. Each needs 2–3 hours.

Finish with a walk along the canal or through Major's Hill Park, then dinner in the market or on Elgin Street. If you have energy left, the ByWard Market area stays lively into the evening.

Day one follows the one-day plan but with a slower museum visit and no rush. Day two is for the things outside the core: the Canadian War Museum west of downtown, the Canada Science and Technology Museum, or a half-day in the Glebe and at Lansdowne Park.

If the weather is good, spend the second afternoon in Gatineau Park across the river in Quebec. Trails start within a short drive of downtown and the park is free to enter; a car or a bus plus taxi is the practical way there. In winter, swap the park for the Rideau Canal Skateway if it is open, and check the ice status before you go.

Two days is enough to see Parliament, the canal, one or two museums and a neighbourhood or two without rushing. Add a third day only if you want both the War Museum and the History Museum, or a day trip.

A third day buys you either a second full museum or a day out of the city. In town, the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau and the Canadian War Museum are the two big ones most visitors miss on a short trip; each takes half a day.

For a day trip, Perth and Smiths Falls are small Ontario towns about an hour to ninety minutes southwest by car, with canal locks, a heritage main street and the Smiths Falls railway museum. Without a car, VIA Rail serves Smiths Falls and Perth on the Toronto–Ottawa line, but check schedules because service is limited.

A third day also lets you slow down: a morning at the National Gallery, an afternoon in the Glebe, and an evening at a festival if your dates line up. Ottawa's festival season runs roughly May to September.

Ottawa's headline sights are cheap by North American standards: Parliament Hill, the canal banks, ByWard Market and Gatineau Park trails cost nothing. The money goes on museums, food and transport. Figures below are 2026 estimates in Canadian dollars and vary by season and age.

Downtown Ottawa is walkable, and the O-Train and buses cover the gaps. A car is only useful for Gatineau Park and the Perth or Smiths Falls day trip. In winter, check the Rideau Canal Skateway status daily: it opens and closes with the weather, and a warm spell can shut it for the season.
