Ostrava is the Czech Republic's third city and its industrial heart: a working steel and coal landscape that has been turned into museums, a music festival and a huge cultural zone at Dolní Vítkovice. It is not a pretty old town. Come for the blast furnace, the mines and the beer, and treat it as a 1–2 night stop on the Prague–Kraków or Prague–Katowice line.

Getting around

Trams, trolleybuses and buses run often and cost little. Tap a contactless card on the machine on board: a 10-minute ticket with no transfers is 23 Kč, a 60-minute ticket with transfers is 30 Kč, and the day is capped at 100 Kč. The main station (Ostrava hl.n.) and Svinov are both outside the old town; Ostrava-Stodolní is the stop next to it.

Watch out

Safety

Ostrava is a normal working city and safe by day; the real issues are pickpockets on trams, noisy bar streets at night and cold, dark winters. Keep to lit streets and use trams after dark.
  • The two main stations are not walkable to the old town: plan a tram or taxi.
  • Mine and Vítkovice tours run at fixed times; the Vítkovice English tour must be booked in advance, and other sites may only offer tours in Czech or Polish — check before you go.
  • Parts of the city are still industrial; stick to lit streets at night and use trams after dark.
  • Stodolní Street bars can be loud and crowded at weekends.
