Namba and Shinsaibashi
This is the default for a first visit. Dotonbori, the covered Shinsaibashi shopping street and the Kuromon market are within walking distance, and the Nankai line runs from Namba station to Kansai Airport without a change. You can eat late, walk home, and never need a taxi.
The trade-off is noise. Rooms facing Dotonbori or the main streets can be loud until midnight, so ask for a higher floor or a room at the back. Rates here are the highest in the city on weekends.
Shinsaibashi is slightly calmer and better for shopping; Namba is better for transport and food. Both are on the Midosuji subway line, which runs north to Umeda and Shin-Osaka.
Umeda and Shin-Osaka
Umeda, around Osaka Station, is the northern hub: JR loop line, Hankyu and Hanshin private railways, department stores and the Umeda Sky Building. It suits travellers who plan day trips to Kyoto or Kobe and want to leave from a major station.
Shin-Osaka is a different place: a Shinkansen station with hotels around it and little else. It is the right choice for a single night between two rail legs, or for an early departure. It is not a base for sightseeing.
Both are quieter at night than Namba. If you want dinner after 22:00, you will likely ride the subway south.
Tennoji and budget areas
Tennoji, south of the centre, has the JR loop, the Haruka airport train, a park and zoo, and cheaper beds than Namba. It is a practical base if you are watching costs or arriving late at KIX.
Hostels cluster around Namba, Tennoji and the Nishinari area west of Shin-Imamiya. Nishinari is the cheapest part of the city and has a reputation for rough streets and day-labour hotels; some travellers are fine there, others are not. Read recent reviews and check the exact block before booking.
For families, the Osaka Bay area near Universal Studios has large hotels and direct trains, but you will commute for everything except the park.
