Best time to visit Japan: weather and seasons by month

Japan runs four clear seasons, and the month you pick changes weather, crowds and hotel prices more than any other single decision. The table below is the short version of the parent Japan guide; use it to shortlist two or three months, then check flights and beds before you commit.

Two windows are crowded for reasons that have nothing to do with the weather: cherry blossom in late March and April, and the autumn leaves in November. Both are worth it if you book months ahead and accept peak prices. April's caution rating is about crowding and cost, not poor weather: the weather is usually good, but blossom peak in early April and Golden Week at the end of the month make it the busiest window of the year. If your dates are fixed and fall in Golden Week (29 April–5 May), Obon (about 13–16 August) or the New Year shutdown (29 December–3 January), plan transport and beds first and sightseeing second.

Japan is long and mountainous, so the same month behaves differently in three main zones. Honshū cities — Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima — have a rainy season from June to mid-July, humid heat in July and August, and a typhoon risk that peaks in September. Hokkaidō, around Sapporo and Niseko, has no real rainy season and is at its best from May to September; snow covers it from December to March, which is the ski season. Okinawa is subtropical: rainy season May–June and typhoons July–September, with March, April, October and November the best months in the climate profile used here.

That is why the honest answer to "when should I go?" depends on where. If your dates are stuck in July or August, fly to Hokkaidō or Tōhoku instead of staying in the cities. If you want Okinawa beaches, aim for late spring or autumn and keep a buffer day for a cancelled flight or ferry.

The cheapest months for city hotels are January, after the New Year holidays end on about 3 January, and February. March to April and November are the most expensive because blossom and autumn leaves pull in domestic and international travellers at the same time. Golden Week at the end of April and Obon in mid-August are domestic travel peaks: Shinkansen reserved cars and hotels sell out, and prices rise even where the weather is ordinary.

Book early for blossom season, Golden Week, Obon, the New Year window and the Sapporo Snow Festival in early February. Outside those windows, city hotels are usually easier to find closer to your dates, but treat any booking lead time as a check rather than a rule. Cherry blossom moves north through spring and autumn leaves run the other way, from north to south, but the exact dates shift with the weather each year, so check a forecast before locking in a single city. Winter is the season for skiing and snowboarding in Hokkaidō and the Japan Alps, and for clear, dry city days elsewhere. Summer is festival season — Gion Matsuri in Kyoto, Tenjin Matsuri in Osaka, Nebuta Matsuri in Aomori, Awa Odori in Tokushima — but it is also hot and humid, so build in indoor breaks and start early. September is still hot and carries the highest typhoon risk; keep one flexible day in coastal and island plans.
