Trains: the default
The Nankai line runs from KIX to Namba, and Namba is the easiest single stop for Shinsaibashi, Dōtonbori and Nippombashi. The Rapi:t limited express is faster and has reserved seats; the ordinary express costs less and takes about ten minutes longer. Both are one train, no transfer, which is why most travellers take them.
If you are staying near Umeda, Tennōji or Shin-Ōsaka, the JR Haruka limited express is the better fit. It runs to Tennōji and Shin-Ōsaka and continues to Kyoto, so it also suits anyone flying into KIX and going straight to Kyoto. From Shin-Ōsaka, the Midosuji subway line reaches Umeda and Namba.
IC cards such as ICOCA work on the trains and the subway. Buy one at a ticket machine at the airport station, or use a mobile IC card on your phone. A reserved seat on the Rapi:t or Haruka costs more than an unreserved one; on busy weeks the reserved cars sell out.

Buses: best for Umeda and hotels
The airport limousine bus is the simplest option if your hotel is near a stop or you are staying in Umeda. Buses leave from outside the arrivals hall, take about 50–70 minutes to central Osaka, and drop you at major hotels and stations. You do not handle your bags on stairs, which matters with a large suitcase.
Buses are also useful for late arrivals, because they run later than the last train on some routes. Check the last departure for your route before you book a late flight. Tickets are sold at the bus counter in the arrivals hall or from a machine.
Taxis and late arrivals
A taxi from KIX to central Osaka costs roughly ¥15,000–20,000 (2026 estimate, check) and takes about 50–60 minutes off-peak. It is the only comfortable option after the last train, and the fare is worth splitting between three or four people. Fixed-fare taxis to some areas exist; ask at the rank before you get in.
If you arrive after the last train, the practical choices are a taxi, an airport-area hotel, or a night bus to the city. Do not plan on a train after roughly 23:30. For a late arrival, a hotel near the airport or a taxi to a hotel near Namba is the least stressful plan.

A single traveller on a budget can reach central Osaka for under ¥1,000 on the Nankai express. The Rapi:t and the limousine bus sit in the ¥1,300–1,800 band. A taxi is roughly ten times the train fare, so it only makes sense late at night or when split.
If you are continuing to Kyoto, the JR Haruka is often the cheapest and easiest single ticket from KIX, and it avoids a transfer in Osaka. Compare that with a train to Shin-Ōsaka plus a Shinkansen to Kyoto before you buy.

Tips
Buy your ticket before you clear customs if you can, or at the machine at the station. Machines take cash and IC cards; some take foreign cards, some do not, so keep some yen on you for the first hour.
If you are staying in Osaka for a few days, an IC card is the single most useful thing to buy at the airport. It works on the subway, city buses and most convenience-store counters, and you top it up at machines.
