  • China ↗Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card before you fly. QR payment is the default in shops, taxis and many stalls, and some places refuse cash or a foreign card. Carry cash as a backup.
  • China ↗Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and many news sites are blocked. Use an eSIM with roaming (it routes through your home network) or install and test a VPN before you fly; VPN sites and app stores are hard to reach inside China, and only government-approved VPNs are officially permitted.

Nanning is the capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and the practical hinge of southern China: high-speed trains fan out to Guilin, Kunming, Guangzhou and the Vietnam border at Pingxiang, and the airport has a rail link into town. The city itself is green, flat and modern, with a strong regional museum, a mountain park and a food scene built on rice noodles, sour pickles and tropical fruit. Most travellers use it as a one- or two-night stop, not a destination in itself.

Getting around

The metro is the default: five lines, bilingual signs, fares from ¥2, and a 10% discount if you scan the Nanning Citizen Card QR in Alipay or WeChat. Buy single tokens from machines (¥5, ¥10, ¥20 notes and ¥1 coins) or use your phone. City buses cost ¥1–2. Taxis start at ¥9 for 2 km and most cross-town rides stay under ¥20; shared bikes and e-bikes fill the last kilometre.

Watch out

Safety

Nanning is a low-crime city by Chinese standards; the real risks are summer heat and rain, traffic when crossing roads, and the wrong railway station on your ticket. Keep your passport with you — hotels and some attractions ask for it.
  • Nanning has several stations: Nanning, Nanning East, Nanning North and Nanning West are far apart. Check your ticket before you leave the hotel.
  • Summer is wet: June to August brings 190–245 mm of rain a month and typhoon-season downpours.
  • Metro stations have bag X-rays and sometimes metal detectors; allow a few extra minutes at rush hour.
  • Airport taxi drivers may refuse the meter. The flat fare is usually ¥100–130 (≈ US$14–19), and ride-hailing is often cheaper.
