Mumbai transport options at a glance
Mumbai is long and thin, so the mode you pick depends on direction more than distance. The suburban rail network and the Metro run north–south along the spine of the city; everything else fills the gaps between stations and the coast.
Fares below are 2026 estimates. Road times are the real variable: a 10 km trip can take 25 minutes at 06:00 and 70 minutes at 18:00.
| Mode | Best for | Time | Cost (2026 estimate) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suburban train | Long north–south hops, commuting hours | Fast between stations; 5–20 min per hop | ₹10–60 depending on class and distance |
| Metro | Andheri–Dahisar–south corridor and airport side | Similar to train on covered stretches | ₹10–60 |
| City bus (BEST) | Short trips off the rail lines | Slow in traffic | ₹5–25 |
| Auto-rickshaw | Short hops, 2–5 km | 10–25 min | ₹50–200 |
| App cab (Uber/Ola) | Airport, luggage, late nights, groups | 20–70 min depending on traffic | ₹150–400 for 10 km |
| Taxi (black-and-yellow / cool cab) | Station and hotel ranks | Similar to app cabs | Metered; agree or use the app |
| Ferry | Cross-harbour to Elephanta or Alibaug side | Depends on route | ₹100–300 |
Fares and journey times are estimates; check current fares on the operator's site or app before you travel.
Suburban trains and the Metro
The suburban network is the fastest way to cover distance in Mumbai, and it is cheap. It is also the most crowded public transport you are likely to use anywhere: at peak hours, boarding is a physical event. If you are not used to it, travel mid-morning or early afternoon, or take the Metro where it runs parallel.
Buying tickets: single-journey tickets and tokens work for one ride. For three or more days of train and Metro use, a stored-value smart card is worth the small deposit and saves queueing each time. There is no single card or pass that covers trains, Metro, buses, autos and cabs together, so expect to top up or pay separately for each mode.
Practical points: bag scans and queues at Metro entrances add 5–10 minutes; the first carriage on many trains is reserved for women; and stations have separate queues and sometimes separate counters for men and women. Keep your ticket or card until you exit, and expect a fine if you travel without one.
- Travel off-peak if you can: roughly 11:00–16:00 and after 20:30 on weekdays.
- Stand back from the platform edge; trains do not always stop where you expect.
- Use the Metro for the airport side of the city where the line covers your route.
- Keep bags in front of you in crowds.
Autos, taxis and app cabs
Auto-rickshaws are metered in Mumbai, unlike in many other Indian cities, and they are the default for short trips. Drivers may still ask for a round figure, especially near stations and tourist areas; insist on the meter or book the app version, which fixes the fare up front. Autos are not allowed in some central and south Mumbai zones, so a cab may be the only road option there.
Black-and-yellow taxis and cool cabs wait at ranks and hotels. App cabs (Uber, Ola and similar) are usually the simplest option for airport runs, luggage and late nights. Expect drivers to call to confirm your location, and confirm the number plate before getting in. Surge pricing applies in heavy rain, which in Mumbai can be sudden and severe.
Traffic is the thing to plan around. The airport run to south Mumbai is 1–2 hours by road at peak times; the same trip can be under an hour early on a Sunday. If you have a flight, leave a wide margin or use the rail and Metro combination where it fits your route.
| Situation | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Airport to south Mumbai | App cab or pre-booked taxi | Luggage, fixed fare, no transfers |
| Short hop near your hotel | Auto or app auto | Cheapest metered option |
| Long north–south trip in daylight | Suburban train or Metro | Beats traffic |
| Late night | App cab | Tracking and fixed fare |
| Heavy monsoon rain | Train or Metro if running | Roads flood and cabs surge |
What it costs
Mumbai is one of the cheaper big cities for transport if you use rail and autos. A day of mixed travel — a couple of train or Metro rides, two autos and one cab — commonly lands around ₹400–800 per person (2026 estimate), less if you stay on rail and buses.
Cash still matters. Autos and small buses may not take cards, and app cabs sometimes ask for cash when the network is poor. Keep small notes. Tipping is not expected for autos and cabs beyond rounding up the fare.
| Item | Cost (2026 estimate) |
|---|---|
| Suburban train or Metro single ride | ₹10–60 |
| BEST bus ride | ₹5–25 |
| Auto, 2–5 km | ₹50–200 |
| App cab, 10 km | ₹150–400 |
| Airport to south Mumbai by cab | ₹700–1,200 |
| Stored-value smart card | Small deposit plus top-up |
Practical tips
Plan your day around the rail spine where possible. Most of what a visitor wants — the Gateway area, Colaba, Bandra, Juhu, the airport — sits near a station or a short auto ride from one.
Monsoon changes everything. Between roughly June and September, heavy rain floods roads and slows everything; rail and Metro keep running more reliably than cabs. Carry a small umbrella and allow extra time.
If you are only in Mumbai for a day or two, do not over-plan the transport: pick one area per half-day and use autos or cabs within it rather than crossing the city repeatedly.
- Keep small notes for autos and buses.
- Screenshot your destination address in English and, if possible, in Marathi or Hindi script.
- Charge your phone before long cab rides; you will need it for maps and payment.
- Allow 1–2 hours for airport runs at peak times.
FAQ
Questions people ask
What is the best way to get around Mumbai?
For long north–south trips, the suburban train or Metro is fastest and cheapest. For short hops, luggage and late nights, use an app cab or a metered auto. Most visitors mix all three, depending on the time of day and the traffic.
Is there a transit pass for Mumbai?
There is no single pass covering trains, Metro, buses, autos and cabs. Stored-value smart cards work on the suburban trains and the Metro and are worth buying for stays of three days or more. Buses and autos are paid separately.
Are taxis or ride-hailing better in Mumbai?
App cabs are usually easier for visitors: fixed fares, tracking and no haggling. Rank taxis are fine when one is waiting and the meter is used. For short trips, a metered auto is cheaper than either.
How long does it take to get from Mumbai airport to the city?
Allow 1–2 hours by road to south Mumbai at peak times, and under an hour early on a Sunday. Traffic and monsoon rain are the variables; the Metro covers part of the airport side of the city.
Is Mumbai public transport safe for visitors?
Yes, with normal city precautions. Watch your bag in crowds, keep your ticket until you exit, and use app cabs at night. The first carriage on many trains is reserved for women.
