Mumbai airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Two terminals serve the city: T1 (domestic, Santa Cruz) and T2 (international and some domestic, Sahar). Both sit in the northern suburbs, roughly 20 km from the Fort and Colaba area of south Mumbai (approximate). Which terminal you land at changes your first move, so check your ticket before booking anything.

The prepaid taxi counter inside the arrivals hall is the simplest start: you pay a fixed amount, get a slip, and hand it to the driver outside. No negotiation, no meter argument. App taxis (Uber, Ola) usually match or beat the prepaid fare and let you pay by card, but pickup points at T2 can be a walk from the exit, so follow the signs rather than the first person who offers to help.

Black-and-yellow kaali-peeli taxis still run on meters, and the meter is the fare — refuse any flat-rate offer. Drivers may ask for a luggage surcharge, which is normal; agree it before loading. At night, when trains have stopped and buses are thin, a taxi is the only sensible option.

Mumbai's suburban trains are the cheapest way in, but the airport has no station of its own. You need a short auto or taxi ride to Andheri (west) or Vile Parle, then a train on the Western Line toward Churchgate. Fares are a few tens of rupees (check). The catch is rush hour: morning and evening peak trains are packed beyond anything a visitor with a suitcase should attempt (check exact windows).

BEST city buses run from outside both terminals and cost a few tens of rupees (check), but they crawl through the same traffic as taxis and take 90 minutes or more (check). Metro Line 3 (Aqua) is planned to serve the airport corridor toward south Mumbai; check the current operating status and station access before you rely on it, as the network is still being extended.

Budget ₹700–1,400 for a taxi or app car to south Mumbai (2026 estimate, check), less if you stop in the suburbs. Trains and buses cost under ₹60 (check) but add the auto fare to the station, so the real saving is smaller than it looks. If you are staying near the airport in Andheri or Bandra, a taxi is ₹300–600 (check) and the train question disappears.

Traffic is the whole story in Mumbai. The parent country facts support 1–2 hours by road from BOM to south Mumbai at peak times; off-peak the same trip is quicker (check). Build slack into any onward booking — a domestic flight, a train from CSMT or a hotel check-in.

Ignore anyone inside the terminal offering a taxi, a hotel or a SIM. Use the official counters and your own app. If you arrive without rupees, airport ATMs and exchange desks work, but rates are poor; a small amount is enough to get you moving, and cards work for app rides.
