Muju is a small mountain county in North Jeolla, not a city break. The town itself is one walkable grid of bus terminal, market and river path; everything worth the trip — Deogyusan National Park, the Gucheon-dong valley, the ski resort, Taekwondowon — sits 20–40 minutes out by local bus or taxi. Come for one full day of hiking or a winter ski weekend, not for sightseeing in town.

Getting around

The town centre is walkable. For the mountains use the Muju-jin local bus from the intercity terminal (Gucheon-dong valley every 20–30 min; flat county fare, T-money accepted) or a taxi — meters start around ₩2,300, but long runs such as Muju-eup to the resort may be a fixed regional rate, so agree the fare first. KakaoT works in town; in the valleys a local call-taxi dispatcher is more reliable. No train station in the county.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are mountain weather, unlit valley roads after dark and the last-bus problem. Tell someone your trail plan and carry rain gear even in May.
  • No rail service: you arrive by intercity bus or car, and the last bus back from the valley can strand you — check the return times before you set off.
  • July and August bring the heaviest rain of the year (about 300 mm in July); mountain trails and the fortress road can close.
  • The road up Mt. Jeoksang is steep and can be impassable in winter; the Cheonillyeo Falls and fortress sit on that road.
  • Long taxi runs may be quoted as a flat rate rather than on the meter: confirm the total before you get in.
  • Taekwondowon is closed Mondays; the Firefly Festival and Mountain Film Festival run on fixed dates only — check the year's schedule.
