Monterey County is the southern half of Monterey Bay plus the Big Sur coast and the inland Salinas Valley. Almost everything a visitor wants sits within 40 minutes of Monterey: the aquarium and Cannery Row, Carmel's beach and mission, Pacific Grove, 17-Mile Drive, Point Lobos. Big Sur is a half-day drive south on Highway 1, not a base unless you book far ahead. The inland corridor along Highway 101 (Salinas, Soledad, King City) is farm country and wine, worth a stop only if you are driving between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
