Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is Germany's Baltic coast: 1,900 km of shoreline, sandy beaches, 19th-century resort towns, Brick Gothic Hanseatic centres and two UNESCO old towns (Wismar, Stralsund). It is the least densely populated state, so trains are slow and a car helps inland. Sleep in Rostock or on Rügen for the beach; Schwerin for a short city stop; the Mecklenburg Lake District for canoeing and cycling.
