Lower Saxony is Germany's second-largest state by area but its sights sit in clusters 1–3 hours apart: the North Sea coast and East Frisian Islands, the Lüneburg Heath, the Harz and Weser hills in the south, and the cities of Hanover, Brunswick, Hildesheim and Göttingen. Pick one cluster plus a city base rather than crossing the state twice. Hanover is the rail hub; the Niedersachsen-Ticket makes regional day-trips cheap.
