Marrakech in March: what to expect

March is the start of spring in Marrakech. Days are mild and often bright, evenings still cold enough for a jacket, and rain arrives in short spells rather than all-day drizzle. The city sits on the plain below the High Atlas, so the mountains stay noticeably colder and can still hold snow above about 2,000 m.

The pattern is stable enough to plan around: mornings cool, midday warm in the sun, a sharp drop after sunset. Riads are built for summer shade, so many rooms feel cold at night in March — ask about heating before you book. The table below is a 2026 estimate; check a forecast before you pack.

March sits in the sweet spot before the April and Easter rush. Jemaa el-Fna, the souks and the Majorelle Garden are busy but manageable, and midweek is calmer than Friday to Sunday. Riads, guides and desert tours are easier to book at short notice than in April.

Prices are medium: below peak spring and Christmas, above the deep winter lull. Expect riad rates to climb in the last week of the month as Easter travel starts. Desert camps and Atlas treks reopen properly in March, so tour prices are normal season rather than winter discounts.

The big variable is Ramadan, which runs into early March 2027 (check). Outside the main tourist zones, daytime cafés and some shops close or shorten hours, and the rhythm shifts to a late, lively evening. It is a good time to see the city at its most local — just plan meals around sunset and expect transport to be full around Eid al-Fitr (check).

Beyond the religious calendar, March is a working month in Marrakech rather than a festival month. Spring brings almond blossom in the valleys towards the Atlas, and the gardens — Majorelle, Menara, the Agdal — are at their greenest. Check local listings for one-off concerts and exhibitions before you go.

In the city, March is ideal for walking: the medina, the souks, Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs and the Majorelle Garden are all comfortable in mild weather. The gardens and the Menara olive groves are at their best now, before the heat.

Out of town, March reopens the desert and the mountains. A one-way Sahara crossing towards Merzouga works well, with warm days and cold nights. The High Atlas around Imlil and the Tichka pass is clear of the worst winter snow but can still close after a storm — check road conditions. Essaouira on the coast is mild and windy, a good contrast to the inland heat that arrives later.

Pack for two seasons in one day. Mornings and evenings need a warm layer; midday wants light cotton. A rain shell is worth the space for the few wet days, and comfortable closed shoes handle the medina's uneven lanes better than sandals.

Add sun protection — the spring sun is strong at this latitude — plus a scarf for mosque areas and dusty days, and a refillable bottle. If you are heading to the desert or the Atlas, bring a fleece or down layer: nights near Merzouga and Imlil drop close to freezing in early March.

February is colder and quieter, with snow still on the High Atlas and Ramadan starting about 8 February 2027 (check). April is warmer but much busier and pricier, with Easter crowds in Marrakech and Fes. May is warm and green, with the rose harvest in the Dades valley and Eid al-Adha about 16 May 2027 filling transport (check).
