Best time to visit Marrakech: weather, crowds and events by month

Marrakech sits on the Haouz plain below the High Atlas, so the pattern is simple: two good windows in spring and autumn, a hot summer, and a bright but cold winter. The table below is the short version; the notes after it explain what each season changes for a traveller.

March to May and October to November give the combination most visitors want: daytime highs roughly in the low 20s to high 20s °C, cool nights, and the Atlas close enough for a day trip. April and October are the busiest and most expensive weeks of the year outside the Christmas period, so riads in the medina sell out first and prices climb.

Spring brings green valleys and almond blossom in February and March, and the rose harvest in the Dades valley in May. Autumn brings the date harvest and the start of the desert season, when nights in Merzouga and Zagora are still comfortable. If you want the desert as part of the trip, October and November are the safest bet on the Marrakech side.

July and August push Marrakech past 40 °C, and the country page flags both months as caution. Sightseeing works if you start at opening time, rest indoors from about 13:00 to 17:00, and go out again in the evening. Many riads have small plunge pools; few have full air conditioning in every room, so check before booking.

The standard escape is the coast or the mountains. Essaouira is about 2.5–3 hours by road and stays mild with strong wind; Imlil in the High Atlas is roughly 1.5 hours away and noticeably cooler. Both are better bases than Marrakech for a July or August trip.

December to February gives clear skies and daytime temperatures around 18 °C, which is pleasant for walking the medina. The problem is after sunset: nights drop near 0 °C, and traditional riads are built around open courtyards with no central heating. Ask specifically about heaters, blankets and hot water before you book.

Snow above about 2,000 m can close the Tizi n'Tichka pass to Ouarzazate after storms, which affects desert itineraries. Christmas and New Year are busy and expensive in Marrakech and at the desert camps, while January outside those weeks is the quietest and cheapest month.

Marrakech has two peak seasons: April–May and October, plus the Christmas–New Year fortnight. In those weeks expect the highest riad rates of the year and full guided tours. Late June, early September and January are the value months: still workable weather, noticeably lower prices.

As a rule, book riads and any Sahara tour 6–8 weeks ahead for April, October and the Christmas period. For the quiet months, a few days ahead is usually enough, though the best-known riads still fill. Ramadan changes the rhythm rather than the weather: daytime cafés close outside tourist areas, hours shorten, and evenings are lively. In 2027 it runs about 8 February to 9 March (check).

The dates that matter most for planning are lunar and shift each year. Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr affect opening hours and transport; Eid al-Adha fills buses and trains as families travel. National holidays such as New Year's Day, Independence Manifesto Day, Yennayer and Labour Day close offices but rarely disrupt a tourist trip.

Marrakech also hosts the Marrakech International Film Festival, usually in late November or early December, and the Marrakech Marathon in late January. Both push up hotel demand for a few days; exact 2026 dates should be checked before booking around them.

Layers are the answer in every month except midsummer. Spring and autumn need a light jacket for evenings; winter needs a warm mid-layer and something for cold riad nights; summer needs sun protection and loose clothing that covers shoulders and knees for religious sites.
