Marrakech in May: what to expect

May is the tail of Marrakech's spring window. Days are reliably warm and dry, the light is strong by mid-morning, and the sharp cold of winter nights is gone. The city sits on the plain below the High Atlas, so it heats up faster than the coast: expect a hot middle of the day and a pleasant evening.

Rain is uncommon but not impossible, and any shower passes quickly. The bigger variable is heat late in the month, when the first pre-summer spikes can push the afternoon well past 30 °C (check). Plan sightseeing for the morning and late afternoon, and use the middle of the day for a riad courtyard, a hammam or a long lunch.

In the High Atlas above Imlil the air stays cool and the valleys are green; snow has cleared from most trekking routes, though high passes can still hold patches. In the Sahara, May days are hot and nights mild — workable, but the season is closing.

May sits mid-range for both crowds and prices at country level: below the April and October peaks, above the low season of January and February. Jemaa el-Fna, the Bahia Palace and the Majorelle Garden still draw steady queues, and riad rates are worth booking ahead for the last week of the month.

Flights from Europe and North America are usually cheaper than in April, and the last week of May can be quieter still as the heat builds (check).

The one date to watch is Eid al-Adha, expected around 16 May 2027 (check). It is a major family holiday: transport fills before and after, and desert tours run on reduced schedules. Book transport and any Sahara trip well ahead if your dates overlap.

Marrakech's calendar is thin on fixed annual festivals in May, and dates for cultural events shift year to year — check locally before you build a trip around one. The reliable fixtures are the national holidays and the market rhythm of the medina.

Labour Day on 1 May is a public holiday; expect some offices and a few businesses closed, but the medina and tourist sites generally keep working. Eid al-Adha, expected around 16 May 2027 (check), is the month's big disruption: a family and religious holiday that fills transport and quiets the tourist quarters.

Spring is also rose harvest season in the Dades valley, south of Marrakech toward Ouarzazate — a reason to add a southern loop if you have the days. In the city, look for concerts and exhibitions at the cultural centres and riads, which are announced month by month rather than fixed.

In the city, do the medina and the main monuments early. The Bahia Palace, Saadian Tombs and Ben Youssef Madrasa open in the morning and are far more comfortable before the heat. Jemaa el-Fna is best at dusk, when the food stalls set up and the square fills.

May is a strong month for the mountains. The High Atlas around Imlil is green, the trails below the snow line are open, and day walks or a short Toubkal approach are realistic. It is also a workable window for the Sahara before summer heat: a three-day crossing toward Merzouga works, though nights are no longer cold.

The coast is the other option. Essaouira, about 2.5–3 hours by road from Marrakech (check), is mild and breezy — good for a couple of nights if the city heat gets to you. Ouarzazate and the Dades valley make a good southern loop, with the rose harvest as a bonus.

April is the busiest spring month, with Easter crowds and higher prices; May trades a little more heat for calmer streets and cheaper rooms. If you want the full spring peak, April is the one to book early.

June marks the turn: heat builds inland and the parent country guide flags caution for Marrakech, with the coast and mountains becoming the better base. July is hotter still, with Moroccan and European summer holidays filling the beaches — May is the last month before that shift.
