Before you start
Welcome to the Sultan Park & National Museum audio walk in Malé. 3 stops: National Museum, Hukuru Miskiy (Old Friday Mosque) and Grand Friday Mosque and Islamic Centre. Morning cluster: the National Museum, Sultan Park and the Grand Friday Mosque exteriors on one flat, shadeless walk; done before the noon sun.
Sultan Park, the National Museum and the Islamic Centre, the centre of the island only. Underfoot: paved streets, scooters everywhere; slope: flat; shade: low.
Malé is the smallest and most crowded of capitals: a whole city on an island you can walk across in half an hour, in a country made mostly of water.
Before you start: Dress covered near mosques and in the town; swimwear only on resort or designated tourist beaches. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.

Look for
- Royal thrones and regalia
- Buddhist-era carvings
- Islamic period and daily life
- Sultan Park
- Sultan Park entrance
- Objects where allowed
Stop 1 of 3: National Museum. Arrival point: Walk or taxi to Sultan Park.
Go mid-morning or late afternoon for air conditioning and an hour of history: royal thrones, carved coral stone and the Buddhist past; check the opening days before you walk over, because weekly closing days differ. On a first visit: The best short introduction to the country's history.
Look for Royal thrones and regalia: Ceremonial objects of the sultans. Look for Buddhist-era carvings: Coral and stone pieces from before conversion to Islam. Look for Islamic period and daily life: Manuscripts, lacquerware, weaponry and household objects. Look for Sultan Park: Shade and benches outside. For a photo: Sultan Park entrance, morning. For a photo: Objects where allowed, opening hours.
Cover shoulders and knees; no photos of exhibits where signed. Tour groups mid-morning; quiet after 15:00. Shoulders and knees covered. The museum sits in Sultan Park, on the grounds of the former royal palace, and shows the country's history from the Buddhist period to the sultanates.
Walk:Next, stop 2: Hukuru Miskiy (Old Friday Mosque). It's about 7 minutes on foot, about 300 metres to the south-west. Route: Walk to the old mosque. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.
2. Hukuru Miskiy (Old Friday Mosque)
ހުކުރު މިސްކިތް
Look for
- Coral-stone walls
- Lacquered wooden doors and ceiling
- Old gravestones
Stop 2 of 3: Hukuru Miskiy (Old Friday Mosque). Arrival point: Walk from Sultan Park or a short taxi.
Go in the morning, between prayers: a 17th-century mosque of carved coral stone in a garden of old gravestones; the prayer hall is for worshippers, so ask at the gate and dress covered.
Look for Coral-stone walls: Carved with Arabic script and floral patterns. Look for Lacquered wooden doors and ceiling: Visible where access is allowed. Look for Old gravestones: Carved coral markers in the grounds.
The old coral-stone Friday mosque, Hukuru Miskiy, completed in the 1650s, dates from a confident period of the sultanate. The Grand Friday Mosque, with its golden dome, and the older Hukuru Miskiy are the two you are likely to see, and it is best to ask at the gate. How old is it? Completed in the 17th century.
Do not enter during prayers. Quiet between prayers; busy on Fridays and holidays. Shoulders and knees covered; women cover their hair.
Walk:Next, stop 3: Grand Friday Mosque and Islamic Centre. It's about 9 minutes on foot, about 550 metres to the east. Route: Walk east. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

- Prayer hall
- Islamic Centre buildings
- The dome from Majeedhee Magu
- Forecourt
Stop 3 of 3: Grand Friday Mosque and Islamic Centre. Arrival point: Walk from Sultan Park or a short taxi to the Islamic Centre.
See the golden dome and the forecourt in the morning, from outside; the interior is for worshippers unless the centre says otherwise, so ask, dress covered and never enter during prayers. On a first visit: The landmark of the skyline.
Look for Forecourt and dome: The best view of the golden dome. Look for Prayer hall: For worshippers; visitor access not confirmed. Look for Islamic Centre buildings: Library and offices; not a visitor attraction. For a photo: The dome from Majeedhee Magu, morning or late afternoon. For a photo: Forecourt, early morning.
Do not enter during prayers or Friday services. Quiet between prayers; crowded on Fridays. The Grand Friday Mosque and Islamic Centre was completed in the 1980s and its golden dome is a city landmark.
