Maku

Maku is a 1-night stop on the overland route from Turkey to Tabriz: see the palace and cliff fortress, then move on.

Maku is the first Iranian town after the Gürbulak/Bazergan border crossing from Turkey. Its main draw is the Baqcheh Jooq Palace, a Qajar-era mansion set in an 11-hectare garden, and the ruins of a fortress wedged into the cliff above town. Most travellers spend one night here before continuing to Tabriz or Urmia.

Watch out

Safety

Maku is generally safe for tourists, but the border area is sensitive: carry your passport at all times and avoid photography near military installations. Check your government's travel advice for Iran before planning a trip.
  • The border crossing from Turkey can be slow: allow 1–2 hours for passport control on both sides.
  • Hiking near the border: stay within sight of the town to avoid accidentally crossing into Turkey.
  • Prices are often quoted in tomans (1 toman = 10 rials); confirm the currency before paying.
