How to get to Madagascar: airports, flights and border crossings

There is no nonstop service from North America, the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or Ireland. Every route involves at least one connection, and the cheapest fares usually add a second. Treat the table below as a planning band, not a quote, and confirm current schedules and fares with the airline or an agent before booking.

Arriving in the Malagasy winter (June–August) means cool nights in Antananarivo and the highlands, so pack a layer for the first night. Arriving in the rains (January–March) raises the chance of a weather delay on the domestic leg, which is another reason to keep the international and domestic bookings on separate days.

First, decide which gateway matches your route. If your trip is the RN7 south, Andasibe or the highlands, fly into Ivato (TNR). If it is only Nosy Be and the northern islands, look at Fascene (NOS), but check the schedule carefully: northern international service is thinner and more seasonal than Antananarivo's, and a cancelled NOS flight can leave you rebooking through TNR anyway.

Second, pick the connection. Paris, Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Johannesburg and Dubai are the common hubs (check); each adds a different total time and a different visa question if you leave the airport. A single overnight stop is easier than two tight connections, especially with checked bags.

Third, book the domestic leg separately and later. Tsaradia / Madagascar Airlines flies TNR to Nosy Be, Diego Suarez, Tuléar and Fort Dauphin in 1–2 h for roughly €150–350 one way (2026 estimate), and schedules change at short notice. Leave a full day in Antananarivo between your international arrival and any domestic flight.

Fourth, sort the arrival formalities. Many visitors can get a visa on arrival at Ivato; confirm the current fee and passport validity rules on the official portal before you fly (check). Have your first night's accommodation address ready for the arrival card, and change a small amount of cash at the airport for the taxi into town.

Fifth, plan the transfer. Ivato sits outside central Antananarivo (distance check); a pre-booked hotel transfer or an official airport taxi is the low-stress option, and traffic can make the run slow at peak times (check). If you land late, sleep near the airport or in town rather than pushing straight onto a domestic flight.

For practical purposes, no. Madagascar is an island and there is no regular international passenger ferry or scheduled land crossing that a tourist would use to enter (check). Cargo and occasional private boats exist, but they are not a travel plan, and arriving that way raises questions at immigration that a normal air arrival avoids.

If you are already in the region, the realistic option is still to fly in, usually from Johannesburg, Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Paris or Dubai (check). Treat any boat or overland idea as something to confirm directly with an operator and with Malagasy immigration before you commit, not as a backup if a flight is cancelled.

Two traps catch first-time visitors. The first is booking a domestic flight on the same day as the international one: a delay on either side can strand you, and domestic schedules move. The second is assuming the northern gateway always has a flight when you need it; Fascene service is thinner, so build the trip around Antananarivo unless the north is the whole point.

Power cuts are common in Antananarivo, so charge devices and download offline maps and boarding passes before you leave the hotel. Tap water is not drinkable; buy sealed bottles or bring a filter. Carry small ariary notes for tips and porters, and keep a printed copy of your booking in case your phone dies at the airport.
