Where to stay in Madagascar: best areas and types of hotel

Match the bed to the route, not to a ranking. Most trips are a night or two in the capital, a lemur stop, then a chain of one- or two-night stays along the RN7 or a beach base in the north.

Prices swing with season and with how far you are from a sealed road. The bands below are working estimates for a double room in 2026, not quoted rates — confirm with the property before you commit.

Start with your arrival and departure flights. If you land at Ivato after dark, take one night near the airport or in Antananarivo rather than pushing straight onto a road. Traffic in the capital can turn 5 km into an hour, so a hotel close to your next morning's route saves more time than a cheaper room across town.

Then fix the one or two places that are hardest to replace: Andasibe, park lodges at Ranomafana and Isalo, and anything on Nosy Be or the islets in July–October. Supply in these spots is small and the season is short, so lead times can be long — ask the property rather than assuming (check).

For the rest of the route, book as you go. RN7 stopovers in Antsirabe, Ambositra, Fianarantsoa or Toliara usually have rooms at short notice, though this varies by town and month (check), and your driver often knows which places are running well that month (check). If you are on a package or a guided circuit, the operator books the chain and you only need to check the standard.

Finally, check the boring things before you pay: is there hot water, is there a generator or solar backup, is the road passable in the rains, and does the price include breakfast and tax. In the far west and the deep south, a lodge that is full in the dry season can be closed entirely in the wet months (check).

Cash is the main friction. Outside Antananarivo and the bigger hotels, cards are unreliable and ATMs can run dry, so carry enough ariary for a few nights and keep small notes for tips and porters (check). Power cuts are routine in the capital, and rural lodges may run a generator only in the evening (check); a power bank and a head torch are worth the space.

Do not book a domestic flight and a hotel on the same day as your international departure. Schedules change at short notice, and a cancelled internal leg can strand you a day from Ivato. Leave a buffer night in Antananarivo before you fly home.

Rates are usually quoted per room, not per person, and breakfast is often extra (check). In the highlands, old colonial-era buildings can be cold and damp at night in the austral winter (June–August); ask for heating or extra blankets. On the coast, ask about mosquito nets and whether the room is screened.
