Lucerne airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Every route starts at Zurich Airport. The train is the default: it is faster than a taxi in daytime traffic, runs into the evening and drops you at Lucerne station, a two-minute walk from the lakefront and the old town.

A taxi or pre-booked transfer only makes sense for late arrivals, groups of three or more with luggage, or a direct door-to-door run to a hotel outside the centre.

Zurich Airport's station is inside the terminal complex, one level below arrivals. Follow the train signs, buy a ticket from a machine, the SBB app or the staffed counter, then take any train toward Zurich HB. From Zurich HB, direct InterRegio trains to Lucerne run several times an hour and take about 45 minutes; the whole trip is roughly an hour.

Some services from the airport run through to Lucerne without a change, so check the departure board before boarding. Second-class one-way fare is CHF 25–30 (2026 estimate); a Supersaver ticket bought in advance can be far cheaper, and a Half Fare card halves the full fare. First class costs about half again as much and buys little on a one-hour ride.

Lucerne station is the terminus. Exits lead to the bus terminal on one side and the lakefront on the other; most hotels in the old town are a 5–15 minute walk. Station lockers and left luggage let you drop bags before check-in.

Taxis wait outside arrivals at Zurich Airport and charge by meter. Expect CHF 150–220 to central Lucerne (2026 estimate), more at night, on Sundays or with heavy traffic; the run takes 50–70 minutes. Ask for a fixed price before you get in if you can.

Pre-booked transfers and airport shuttles quote a fixed price, usually CHF 130–200, and meet you in the arrivals hall with a name sign. For a family or a group of four with ski bags, this is often cheaper per person than the train plus taxis at each end.

Rideshare coverage around Zurich Airport is limited and pickup points are not always at the terminal door, so do not count on it as a cheaper taxi.

Budget CHF 25–30 each way by train, or CHF 150–220 by taxi. A couple travelling together saves roughly CHF 200 by taking the train; a group of four with luggage may find a fixed-price transfer about the same as four train tickets plus a taxi at the hotel end.

If you plan several Swiss legs, price a Half Fare card (about CHF 120 for a month) or a Swiss Travel Pass against your itinerary before buying point-to-point tickets. Children under 16 travel free with the Swiss Family Card when accompanied by a parent with a valid ticket.

Swiss trains are punctual and connections are short, often five minutes on the same platform. If you land late, book a hotel near Zurich Airport rather than paying a night taxi; the first train to Lucerne leaves around 05:00 (check).

Tap water in Switzerland is excellent and free; restaurants charge for bottled water, so ask for 'Hahnenwasser'. Station toilets cost CHF 1–2. Shops close on Sundays except at stations and airports, so buy what you need at the airport before the train.
