Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
- Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
- Poland ↗Poland is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
- Poland ↗The currency is the Polish złoty (PLN), not the euro: decline dynamic currency conversion.
- Poland ↗Most shops close on most Sundays under the trading law; small convenience stores and station shops are the exception.
- Poland ↗The border areas with Belarus and Russia's Kaliningrad region have restricted zones; follow your own government's advice before travelling near them.
Lubuskie is Poland's most forested voivodeship — close to half its area is woodland — and it gets very little tourist traffic. The two cities, Zielona Góra and Gorzów Wielkopolski, are about 2 hours apart by train and neither is a sight-heavy destination. Come for forests, rivers, mushroom picking, the Muskau Park half at Łęknica and the Oder border towns; skip it if you want old towns and museums. A car makes the region work; without one, Zielona Góra is the only comfortable base.

- Forests cover nearly half the province and are easy to get lost in; most grow west to east, so walking north or south gets you out faster.
- Wild boar are common in the woods — keep food sealed and don't approach piglets.
- Zielona Góra-Babimost (IEG) has a thin, changeable flight schedule; treat it as a bonus, not a plan.

Bags between cities
No useful luggage-forwarding service inside Lubuskie; with a hire car you simply carry bags between bases. On trains, keep cases with you — regional services have no luggage desk.
