Szczecin is Poland's northwestern port city on the Odra, about 20 km from the Baltic and close enough to Berlin that many visitors arrive from Germany rather than from Warsaw. The centre is small and walkable, rebuilt after 1945 and laid out with wide avenues and roundabouts. Two nights covers the castle, the Old Town, the Wały Chrobrego promenade and the S-1 shelter; add a third for a day trip to the lagoon or the German border.

Getting around

Trams and buses cover the city; tickets run 15 min (3 zł) to 24 h (15 zł), and you must stamp them on boarding. The centre is best done on foot along the red line painted on the pavement, which links about 40 numbered sights between the station and the castle. Trains from Szczecin Główny reach Dąbie, Gumieńce and Gryfino for 6 zł one way. Call a taxi rather than hailing one at the station.

Watch out

Safety

Szczecin is a normal, safe Polish city by day and in the centre at night. The practical risks are pickpockets on trams, rip-off taxis at the station, and unlicensed bars with no posted prices: ask the total before you sit.
  • Ticket inspectors work plain-clothed and fines are high: stamp your ticket the moment you board.
  • Taxi stands at the station and near clubs charge far more than called taxis; fares inside the centre should stay around 12–15 zł.
  • The Berlin–Szczecin rail line has engineering work with replacement buses via Angermünde until around 2027: check before you travel.
  • Drink-driving is treated severely; the limit is 0.2‰ and police enforce it.
  • Parts of the Old Town are still being rebuilt, so expect building work.
