Kyrgyzstan itineraries: 1 week, 2 weeks and 3 weeks

Kyrgyzstan rewards fewer stops, not more. The country is roughly the size of the UK but most of it is mountain, and a 200 km day on paper can take five hours or more. Build the trip around one loop and accept that you will skip something.

Season decides the route more than taste does. Song-Kul yurt camps run about mid-June to mid-September; high passes such as the road over to the south open in the same window. Spring and autumn suit Bishkek, Osh and Arslanbob better than the high lakes.

This is the answer to the AIO question. Land in Bishkek, take two nights to see Ala-Too Square, Osh Bazaar and the National History Museum, and use one of those days for Ala Archa. Then drive or take a marshrutka around the lake to the south shore for one night, continue to Karakol for three, and return to Bishkek for the last night before your flight.

From Karakol the day options are Altyn Arashan (hot springs, a rough road or a half-day walk in) and Jeti-Oguz with its red rocks. Both are day trips; neither needs a full trekking setup. If you want Ala-Kul, that is a multi-day trek and belongs in a 14-day plan.

The airport is about 25 km from central Bishkek and most flights land at night, so book the first bed before you fly. Do not schedule a long drive for the morning after an overnight arrival.

Ten days buys you the lake and the pastures. Run the 7-day route, then from Karakol go west to Kochkor for a night, on to Song-Kul for two nights in a yurt, and back to Bishkek. Kochkor is the felt-making village and the usual place to arrange a yurt stay or a horse; camps move each season, so confirm the current location rather than an old pin.

Song-Kul sits high and cold at night even in July. Bring a warm layer. The road in is rough and often needs a 4WD or a driver who knows it; this is not a leg to attempt in a small rented sedan.

Two weeks lets you cross the country instead of circling the lake. The route runs Bishkek → Karakol → Kochkor → Song-Kul → Naryn → Tash Rabat → Kazarman → Osh, with the nights shown in the table above. Tash Rabat is the old caravanserai with a yurt camp for the night; Naryn is the base for it and for the Torugart road.

The Kochkor-to-Osh stretch is where you need a driver, not a self-drive. Shared taxis and marshrutkas exist on the main corridors, but the mountain links are thin and slow. Ask at a Kochkor CBT office or your guesthouse for a driver and agree the price before you leave.

Finish in Osh: the bazaar and Sulaiman-Too sacred mountain need two nights. From Osh you can fly back to Bishkek or cross into Uzbekistan, which is usually the better use of the last days. Do not plan to drive back the way you came.

With three weeks, keep the 14-day loop and add Arslanbob for two or three nights of walnut-forest homestays and waterfalls, plus extra days in Karakol for a proper trek such as Ala-Kul. The gain is depth, not distance: the driving is the same, the walking and the village time are longer.

Arslanbob is best in May and September–October, when it is cooler and the walnut harvest is on. In high summer it is hot and the waterfalls are busier.

Distances are short on the map and long on the road. One long drive per day is a realistic ceiling, and mountain roads close or turn difficult with weather. Build a spare night into the end of any trip that finishes with a flight.

Most nationalities can enter visa-free for a short stay, but the rules and the allowed length vary by passport, so check the visa page for your own. Carry some cash in som; ATMs are reliable in Bishkek and Osh and much less so in villages. Tipping is not expected in the same way as in the US.

Book yurt camps and Karakol guesthouses ahead in July and August, and confirm the camp location each season because they move.
