Best day trips from Kyoto: how to get there and what to see
Nara and Osaka are the easiest Kyoto day trips: 35–50 minutes by train, no car needed, and both work in half a day. Uji and Himeji suit a shorter or longer rail day. Amanohashidate needs 2 hours each way, so go only with an early start. Skip any of them on a rainy day if you have already seen the temples.

The choices at a glance
Kyoto sits in the middle of Kansai, so most day trips are short train rides rather than drives. The table below ranks the realistic options by travel time, cost band and how much of a day each one takes. Fares are 2026 estimates and change with season and train type.
If you have only one free day, take Nara. If you have two, add Osaka for the evening or Uji for a quiet half day. Amanohashidate and Himeji are worth it only if you start before 8am and accept a full day on trains.

What each day trip actually gives you
Nara was Japan's first permanent capital, and the Great Buddha hall at Tōdai-ji plus the deer park fill a half day comfortably. Trains leave Kyoto Station often, so you can decide in the morning. Arrive before 9am to see the deer and the temple before the tour groups.
Osaka is the opposite: go late, eat, and come back on the last train. Dōtonbori and the food streets are the point, not the castles. A half day is enough for a first look; a full evening is better.
Uji is the small one. Byōdō-in and the tea shops along the river take three or four hours, which makes it the best choice when you have a morning free and want to be back in Kyoto by lunch.
Himeji Castle is the largest surviving original castle in Japan and the reason to take the longer ride. Pair it with Kōko-en garden next door. Kobe is a harbour city with a foreign-settlement history and good beef; it works as a full day or as a stop on the way to Himeji.
Amanohashidate is a pine-covered sandbar across a bay on the Sea of Japan. The view from the hills on either side is the draw. It is a long ride for one view, so go only if you have a spare day and clear weather.
What a day trip costs
Rail is the main cost. Short hops to Uji and Osaka are cheap; Himeji and Amanohashidate cost more because of distance and limited-express supplements. A nationwide JR Pass rarely pays off for Kyoto day trips alone, so buy point-to-point tickets unless you are also doing a long Tokyo–Kansai run.
Add temple or castle entry, usually a few hundred to about ¥1,000 per site, plus lunch. Budget ¥3,000–¥8,000 per person for a full day including transport, entry and a simple meal; 2026 estimate.
| Item | Typical cost (2026 estimate) |
|---|---|
| Short rail hop (Uji, Osaka) | ¥300–¥800 one way |
| Mid-distance rail (Nara, Kobe) | ¥700–¥1,500 one way |
| Long rail (Himeji, Amanohashidate) | ¥1,500–¥2,500 one way |
| Temple or castle entry | ¥400–¥1,000 |
| Lunch at a local shop | ¥800–¥1,500 |
| Full day, all in | ¥3,000–¥8,000 per person |
Practical tips
Buy tickets at Kyoto Station on the day; none of these routes needs a reservation except limited expresses to Amanohashidate, where a seat helps on weekends.
Start early for the long trips. Nara and Uji reward an 8am departure; Amanohashidate needs one.
Avoid Golden Week, Obon and the cherry-blossom peak if you can, when trains and sites are at their busiest.
Carry a charged phone and an eSIM or pocket wifi for timetables, and keep some cash for small shops and buses.
Check the last train back before you leave in the evening, especially from Osaka.
- Nara: go early, leave by mid-afternoon
- Osaka: go late, stay for dinner
- Uji: a morning is enough
- Himeji: full day, castle plus garden
- Amanohashidate: clear weather only
Questions people ask
What are the best day trips from Kyoto?
Nara and Osaka are the best and easiest: 30–50 minutes by train and no car needed. Uji suits a half day. Himeji and Amanohashidate are worth it only if you start early and accept a full day of travel.
Can I visit these places without a car?
Yes. Nara, Osaka, Uji, Himeji, Kobe and Amanohashidate are all reachable by train from Kyoto Station, and the sights are walkable or a short bus ride from the station. No rental car is needed for any of them.
How long do day trips from Kyoto take?
Uji takes about half a day, Nara and Osaka half to a full day, and Himeji or Amanohashidate a full day with an early start. Travel time each way ranges from about 20 minutes to 2 hours.
Which day trip is best for a first visit?
Nara. It is close, the Great Buddha hall and deer park are the classic first-trip sights, and you can decide to go on the morning of the trip without booking anything in advance.
Do I need a JR Pass for Kyoto day trips?
Usually no. Short Kansai hops cost little, so point-to-point tickets are simpler. A nationwide JR Pass only makes sense if you are also travelling long distances, such as Tokyo to Kansai.
