Where to stay in Kyoto: best neighborhoods and hotels

First trip: stay in Shimogyo or Higashiyama, 5–15 minutes' walk from Kyoto Station or a subway stop, and book 2–3 months ahead for March–May and October–November. Choose a station-area hotel for early trains, a Higashiyama machiya for temple mornings, or a northern base if you want quiet and lower prices.

Quick answer

If this is your first time in Kyoto, stay in Shimogyo ward around Kyoto Station or in Higashiyama near Gion and Kiyomizu-dera. Both put you on the subway and bus network, both have beds at every price, and both let you reach the big sights before the tour groups arrive.

Pick the station area if you arrive late, leave early, or plan day trips to Nara, Osaka and Uji. Pick Higashiyama if you want to walk out into old lanes and temple streets at 7am. Pick Nakagyo or Kawaramachi if food and evening wandering matter more than a 10-minute head start on the temples.

Book 2–3 months ahead for late March to early April and for November. Outside those windows, two to four weeks is usually enough, and prices drop in January, February and the June rainy season.

The areas, in detail

Shimogyo ward is the practical base. Kyoto Station is the Shinkansen stop and the hub for JR lines, the Karasuma and Kujo subway lines and city buses, so you can leave luggage, ride to Nara or Uji, and come back without a taxi. The streets south and west of the station are plain but full of hotels, hostels and cheap eats. It is not the Kyoto of postcards, and that is the trade-off.

Higashiyama runs along the eastern hills from Gion to Kiyomizu-dera and Ginkaku-ji. Staying here means you can walk to Yasaka Shrine, Hanamikoji and the Kiyomizu approach before 8am, when they are quiet, and be back for dinner in Pontocho. Rooms are pricier, streets are narrow, and some machiya rentals sit far from any subway, so check the walk to a bus stop before booking.

Nakagyo ward covers Kawaramachi, Pontocho and the Nishiki Market lanes. It is central, walkable and best for evenings: izakaya, standing bars and department-store food halls. Noise can carry on the main streets, so ask for a room away from the road.

Kamigyo and Nishijin are residential and cheaper, with the Imperial Palace gardens nearby. Arashiyama suits travellers who want the bamboo grove and river at dawn and do not mind a 20-minute train ride to the centre. Northern Kyoto around Kinkaku-ji and Ryoan-ji is quiet and green but bus-dependent, which costs time in traffic.

What it costs

Kyoto is not a cheap city, and rates move sharply with the season. The bands below are 2026 estimates for a double room per night, booked two to three months out. Cherry blossom and autumn colour push everything to the top of the range, sometimes higher.

A Kyoto accommodation tax is added to the bill on top of the room rate, with bands that rise with the price of the room. Confirm the current amount when you book. Many small hotels and machiya rentals charge a cleaning fee, and some require cash on arrival.

Booking tips

Reserve early for late March to early April and for mid-November. Those two windows fill first, and the remaining rooms are the expensive ones. If your dates are fixed, book as soon as flights are confirmed; if they are flexible, January, February and June are cheaper and quieter.

Check the walk from your door to a subway station or a useful bus stop, not just the distance to the nearest temple. Kyoto's buses are slow in traffic and crowded in peak season, so a place near the Karasuma or Tozai subway line saves real time.

Luggage forwarding is standard in Japan: send bags ahead to your next city and travel light for a night or two. If you are moving between Kyoto and Osaka or Tokyo, this is often easier than storing bags at the station.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Which area is best to stay in Kyoto?

For a first trip, Shimogyo around Kyoto Station or Higashiyama near Gion. The station area is best for transport and day trips; Higashiyama is best for walking to temples early. Both have beds at every price.

How much does a hotel cost in Kyoto?

As a 2026 estimate, hostel beds run ¥3,000–5,000, business hotels ¥9,000–16,000 and mid-range doubles ¥12,000–25,000 per night. Cherry blossom and November are the most expensive; January and February are cheapest.

Where should first-time visitors stay in Kyoto?

Within a 10-minute walk of Kyoto Station or a subway stop in central Kyoto. That keeps day trips to Nara, Osaka and Uji simple and puts the main bus routes within reach. Higashiyama suits travellers who want temple mornings on foot.

Is it better to stay in Kyoto or Osaka?

Stay in Kyoto if you want temple mornings and old lanes on foot. Osaka is cheaper and better for nightlife, and the train between the two takes about 15–30 minutes, so Osaka works as a base if you do not mind commuting.

Do I need to book Kyoto hotels in advance?

Yes for late March to early April and for November, when rooms sell out months ahead. At other times two to four weeks is usually enough, though weekends and Japanese holidays still fill up.
