Kisoro is the last sizeable town in Western Uganda, sitting at 1,900 m between the DRC and Rwanda borders. It is the practical base for Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and the Virunga volcanoes, and a cheaper alternative to Bwindi lodges. The town itself is small; the value is the access and the mountain scenery.

Getting around

Boda-bodas cover town and short hops. A hired 125–200 cc motorcycle costs about USh20,000–30,000 per day; a 4x4 with driver about four times that. Most trekking operators include park transfers.

Watch out

Safety

Kisoro is generally calm and the main risks are practical: steep muddy trails, limited medical facilities, and border areas near the DRC. Check your government's current travel advice before crossing any border.
  • Trails are steep and muddy in the wet seasons; bring boots with grip.
  • The Busanza/Busengo border crossing with the DRC is only legal for DRC or East African Community passports; other nationalities should use Bunagana.
  • ATMs are limited: Crane Bank takes Visa only, Stanbic takes Visa and Mastercard, Equity takes both — carry cash as backup.
  • Power cuts are common; charge devices when you can.
