Kiribati spans about 4,000 km of the equatorial Pacific in three island groups, straddles the equator and sits partly in the world's earliest time zone. Its two visitor hubs, Tarawa and Kiritimati, are reached by different routes and served by only a few flights a week, so the flight schedule sets the length of the stay. Facilities are basic, cash rules, and low-lying atolls have limited fresh water.

Etiquette

  • Dress modestly: cover shoulders and knees away from the water.
  • In a maneaba (meeting house) follow your host's lead on where to sit; do not walk through during a gathering.
  • Ask before photographing people and villages.
  • Sunday is for church and rest in most communities.

Safety

  • Medical care is basic; carry insurance with evacuation cover and your own medicines.
  • Drink bottled or treated water; water supplies on atolls can be unsafe.
  • Sun and heat on the equator: shade, water and reef-safe sunscreen.
  • Reef passages have strong tidal currents; swim and wade with local guidance.

Kiribati connects through Nadi, Brisbane, Majuro and Honolulu; it is one of the least visited countries in the Pacific.
