The Gilbert Islands are the western group of Kiribati and the home of most of its people. South Tarawa is the arrival point and the only place with a range of guesthouses; outer islands have basic stays, small planes on irregular schedules and little else. Keep one base, use day trips by road, and leave a buffer before an international flight.
