How to get to Kazakhstan: airports, flights and border crossings

For a first trip, book into Almaty (ALA). It is the country's travel hub, the mountains and Charyn Canyon day trips start here, and domestic flights to Astana, Shymkent and Turkistan leave from the same airport. Choose Astana (NQZ) if your trip is the capital plus the steppe, or if fares from Europe are clearly cheaper — you can fly Almaty–Astana in about 1 h 40 min for a modest fare (2026 estimate).

Nobody flies nonstop from the US, Canada, Australia or New Zealand. Expect one connection, most often Istanbul, Dubai, Doha, Frankfurt or Seoul, and treat the total journey as a full travel day. Land borders work well if you are coming from Kyrgyzstan or Uzbekistan; the Caspian route is slow and infrequent.

Almaty and Astana take almost all international traffic. Shymkent, Aktau, Atyrau and Turkistan have airports but mostly serve domestic and regional routes, so they are useful for skipping a long drive, not for arriving from far away.

Fares swing with season. June to September and the New Year period are the most expensive; late April to May and September to early October give good weather with softer prices. Book 6–10 weeks ahead for summer, and check whether your connection needs an overnight — a cheap fare through a hub with a 9-hour layover is rarely the cheaper trip.

All figures are total journey time with one connection, since no nonstop exists from these countries. Add time for the connection airport and for immigration on arrival.

Kazakhstan has long land borders and they are practical for overland travellers. From Kyrgyzstan, the main crossings are near Bishkek toward Taraz and toward Almaty; from Uzbekistan, crossings near Shymkent and Turkistan are the usual route. The China border is open at a few points, including the Khorgos crossing near Almaty region, but paperwork and queues can be slow. The Russia border is long and busy; check current conditions before you plan on it.

By sea, the only realistic option is the Caspian. Aktau and Atyrau have ports, but passenger services are limited and schedules change; most travellers who arrive this way come on a cargo or ferry crossing from Azerbaijan and treat it as an adventure, not a timetable. Check with operators well ahead.

Whatever the route, carry your passport, have your visa or visa-free entitlement confirmed in writing, and expect a registration requirement for longer stays. Rules for land entry can differ from air entry, so confirm before you buy a ticket.

Sort out money and connectivity before you land. The tenge is a cash-friendly currency outside the big cities, and a local eSIM or SIM is cheap and makes taxis and maps much easier. Travel insurance that covers the activities you plan — hiking, skiing, long drives — is worth arranging before departure, not after.
