Where to stay in Kazakhstan: best areas and types of hotel

Base yourself in Almaty for a first trip: the city has the country's biggest choice of hotels, the airport, and the mountains within 30 minutes. Stay central, in the Golden Quarter or around Panfilov Street, so you can walk to cafés, the metro and tour pick-ups.

Astana is a 2-night stop for the capital's architecture, not a base for the country. Turkistan needs one night if you want the mausoleum at opening time. Elsewhere — the Altyn-Emel desert, Kolsai Lakes, Mangystau — you sleep in guesthouses or yurts arranged through a tour, so the accommodation decision is really a tour decision.

Almaty rewards a central base. The Golden Quarter (Zolotoy Kvartal) and the streets around Panfilov Street put you among cafés, bars and the metro, with the cable car to Kok-Tobe nearby. The area around Abay Avenue and the Al-Farabi corridor is quieter and closer to the mountains, but you will rely on taxis. Near the airport (about 15 km northeast of the centre) is only worth it for a very early flight.

In Astana, the left bank of the Esil river holds the new city: Baiterek, the Expo area and most international hotels. The right bank is older, cheaper and more lived-in. Two nights covers the sights; distances are long and windy, so stay near what you plan to see.

Turkistan is small. Anything within walking distance of the Khoja Ahmed Yasawi mausoleum works, and one night is enough. Shymkent is a transport hub for the south rather than a place to linger; a night near the train station or the Ordabasy area is fine. In Atyrau, the oil city on the Caspian, business hotels dominate and prices run higher than elsewhere.

Kazakhstan's hotel stock splits into international chains in Almaty and Astana, Soviet-era blocks that have been renovated to varying standards, and a fast-growing apartment and guesthouse market. Apartments booked by the night are often the best value for stays of three nights or more, especially in Almaty, where a central one-bedroom can cost less than a mid-range hotel room.

Outside the two big cities, guesthouses and homestays are the norm, and near the lakes and deserts you may sleep in a yurt camp run by a tour operator. Those are usually booked as part of the trip, not separately. Prices below are 2026 estimates for a double room in high season; winter rates in Astana can fall sharply, while Almaty stays fairly steady because of ski season.

Summer (June–August) is peak for Almaty, the mountain lakes and Astana, and the good central hotels fill first. Booking two to four weeks ahead is usually enough, but for Nauryz in late March and for the ski season around Shymbulak, book earlier. Winter is quiet outside the ski resorts, and you can often decide a day or two ahead.

Two practical notes. First, many smaller guesthouses outside the cities take bookings by phone or messaging app rather than a global platform, so a local SIM or eSIM helps. Second, registration: hotels register foreign guests automatically, but if you stay in a private apartment or with friends, check the current registration rules before you arrive.

Payments: cards work in city hotels, but guesthouses and yurt camps often want cash in tenge. Carry some, and check the tipping convention before you arrive. Plugs are types C and F at 220 V, so most European and US travellers need an adapter.

Language: Russian is the working language in hotels almost everywhere, with Kazakh in smaller towns; English is common at international chains and rare elsewhere. Save your address in Russian or Kazakh to show a driver. Distances between cities are long, so choose your base by transport, not by hotel quality: a cheap room next to the station beats a good one across town on a 6am train day.
