How much does a trip to Kazakhstan cost? Daily budget and prices

Kazakhstan's price levels sit well below Western Europe or the US, and Almaty and Astana are close to each other in cost. The three tiers below are per person per day, sharing a room at mid-range and comfort. They exclude international flights, visas and organised tours.

The jump between tiers is mostly about your bed and how you move. A hostel dorm and buses keep a day under KZT 27,000. A 3★ hotel plus ride-hailing and one restaurant meal a day lands in the KZT 34,000–72,000 band. Comfort money buys a 4–5★ hotel and a private driver, which is what most people need for canyon and mountain days.

The parent country page quotes a slightly wider budget band of KZT 18,000–30,000 a day, because it allows for a private room or a guesthouse rather than a dorm and a little more food. Both are 2026 estimates; use the lower figure if you sleep in dorms and eat in canteens.

Food is the easiest place to save. A stolovaya (canteen) lunch of soup, a main and tea costs KZT 2,000–3,500, and beshbarmak in a proper restaurant runs KZT 4,000–8,000. A cappuccino in an Almaty café is KZT 1,200–2,000. Supermarket food for a picnic day is cheaper still.

City transport is cheap: an Almaty metro or bus ride is KZT 200–250 (check), and ride-hailing shows the fare upfront. The big-ticket items are the ones that move you out of the city: a car and driver to Charyn Canyon or the Kolsai Lakes costs KZT 40,000–80,000 for the day (2026 estimate, check), and a one-way flight between Almaty and Astana is around KZT 45,000 (check). Park entries are small: Charyn Canyon about KZT 1,000–2,000 (check), and the Shymbulak gondola about KZT 8,000–12,000 return (check).

A typical first trip is 7–10 days based in Almaty with a couple of mountain or canyon days, plus two or three nights in Astana. On a mid-range budget that is roughly KZT 34,000–72,000 a day, plus the domestic flight and any driver days.

Two driver days a week add KZT 80,000–160,000 to the week. If you would rather not drive mountain roads yourself, this is the line item to plan for. Shymkent and Turkistan in the south are a cheaper base for beds and food (check), but the train or flight down there adds cost.

The tenge (KZT) is used everywhere. Cards are accepted in Almaty and Astana hotels, restaurants and larger shops, and domestic payment apps such as Kaspi are common; foreign cards work at most terminals and ATMs. Outside the cities, carry cash.

The tenge has lost value against the dollar in recent years, so check the current rate before you budget, and treat every figure here as a 2026 estimate. Ride-hailing apps show the fare upfront, which avoids the negotiation you would otherwise do with street taxis.

Eat where locals eat: stolovayas, bazaars and bakery counters keep food at KZT 5,000–8,000 a day. Use buses and the Almaty metro in the cities, and compare train, shared taxi and flight prices before booking a domestic leg. Travel in the shoulder months around spring and autumn, when hotel rates in Almaty can soften (check).

Group up for driver days. A car and driver split four ways turns a KZT 60,000 day into KZT 15,000 each, which is the single biggest saving available on a Kazakhstan trip. Hostels and guesthouses also let you cook and wash clothes, both of which quietly add up over a week.
