Kathmandu itinerary: 1, 2 and 3 days
Three days is the right answer for most first-time visitors: one day for Durbar Square and Thamel, one for Swayambhunath and Pashupatinath, one for Boudhanath plus Patan or Bhaktapur. With one day only, do Durbar Square, Swayambhunath and Boudhanath and skip the valley towns.

Which length fits you
Match the itinerary to the days you actually have on the ground, not the days you are in Nepal. Arrival and departure days are usually half-lost to the airport, traffic and paperwork.
If Kathmandu is a stop before a trek, two days is enough to see the big three and buy or rent gear. If it is the whole trip, three days lets you add one valley town without rushing.
| Plan | Best for | Sights | Cost (2026 estimate) | Time on foot |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 day | Long layover or a trek stopover | Durbar Square, Swayambhunath, Boudhanath | NPR 1,600 in entry tickets | 3–4 hours walking, rest by taxi |
| 2 days | First visit with a trek booked | Above plus Pashupatinath and Patan | NPR 2,600 in entry tickets | 5–6 hours walking across two days |
| 3 days | Most first-time visitors | Above plus Bhaktapur, or a Thamel and shopping half-day | NPR 4,100 in entry tickets | 7–8 hours walking across three days |
Ticket prices are 2026 estimates; confirm at the gate. Taxis between sites add roughly NPR 300–800 per hop.
Day 1: Durbar Square, Thamel and Swayambhunath
Start at Kathmandu Durbar Square before 10am, when the light is better and the tour groups have not arrived. The ticket office is at the main gate; the fee covers the square and the museums inside. Allow two hours for the courtyards, the Kumari house and the temple plinths.
Walk or take a short taxi to Thamel for lunch. This is the lodge and trekking-shop district, useful for gear, maps and a SIM or eSIM setup. In the afternoon take a taxi to Swayambhunath, the hilltop stupa west of the centre. The climb is 365 steps from the east side, or you can arrive by road at the top and walk down.
Finish with dinner in Thamel or Patan if you have energy left. Keep the evening light: the next two days involve more walking than they look.
- Book or confirm any trekking permits on day 1 if you leave the city soon after.
- Carry small notes for entry tickets; change is often short at the gates.
- Sunset at Swayambhunath is busy; arrive 45 minutes before to get a spot on the west side.
Day 2: Pashupatinath and Patan
Go to Pashupatinath early. The temple itself is closed to non-Hindus, but the riverside ghats, the cremation platforms and the terraces on the east bank are open with a ticket. Two hours is enough. Dress modestly and do not photograph cremations without asking.
From Pashupatinath, take a taxi to Patan, about 30 minutes depending on traffic. Patan Durbar Square has the best museum in the valley, in the old palace, and the surrounding lanes are full of metalworkers and craft workshops. The ticket usually includes the museum; check at the counter.
Return to Kathmandu in the late afternoon, or stay in Patan for dinner. Patan is quieter than Thamel and a reasonable place to sleep if you prefer a calmer base.
| Site | Entry (2026 estimate) | Time needed | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pashupatinath | NPR 1,000 | 1.5–2 hours | Temple interior closed to non-Hindus |
| Patan Durbar Square | NPR 1,000 | 2–3 hours | Museum ticket often included; check |
| Patan Museum | Included or NPR 250 | 1 hour | Check at the counter |
Day 3: Boudhanath and Bhaktapur
Boudhanath is best in the morning, when pilgrims walk the kora clockwise and the butter lamps are being lit. The stupa is the largest in Nepal and the surrounding lanes have Tibetan monasteries, cafés and shops. Allow two hours including a slow circuit and breakfast on a rooftop.
From Boudhanath, take a taxi to Bhaktapur, 45–60 minutes east. Bhaktapur is the best-preserved Newar town in the valley, with Durbar Square, Taumadhi Square and the pottery square. Give it three hours minimum; many travellers stay a night instead of returning to Kathmandu.
If you would rather not travel on day 3, swap Bhaktapur for a half-day in Patan plus an afternoon of shopping and a massage in Thamel. That version suits anyone flying out the next morning.
- Bhaktapur entry is around NPR 1,800 for foreigners (2026 estimate); check at the gate.
- The last return taxis from Bhaktapur thin out after dark; agree a price or use an app.
- If you stay in Bhaktapur, book ahead in October and November.
What it costs
Entry tickets are the main fixed cost and are paid in cash at each gate. Transport is the variable: a taxi across the city is roughly NPR 300–800, and a full day of hopping between sites can reach NPR 2,000–3,000 if you do not negotiate or use an app.
Food and lodging sit outside this budget. Thamel has the widest range, from hostel dorms to mid-range hotels; Patan and Boudhanath are quieter and often better value for the same money.
| Item | Cost (2026 estimate) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Durbar Square | NPR 1,000 | Keep the ticket; site office can extend it |
| Swayambhunath | NPR 200 | Cash at the gate |
| Boudhanath | NPR 400 | Cash at the gate |
| Pashupatinath | NPR 1,000 | Cash at the gate |
| Patan Durbar Square | NPR 1,000 | Museum sometimes extra; check |
| Bhaktapur | NPR 1,800 | Cash at the gate |
| Taxi across the city | NPR 300–800 | Agree the price first or use an app |
| Full day of taxis | NPR 2,000–3,000 | Cheaper if you walk between nearby sites |
Prices are 2026 estimates and change; confirm at each ticket counter.
Practical tips
Traffic is the biggest threat to any itinerary. A 6 km hop can take 45 minutes in the late afternoon, so group sites by area rather than zig-zagging across the city. Mornings are consistently faster.
Buy or top up a local SIM or eSIM on day 1 so you can use a ride-hailing app and maps. Cash is still king at ticket gates and small stalls; ATMs in Thamel and Patan are reliable but can run out on holidays.
Check the festival calendar before you fix dates. Dashain and Tihar close some businesses and fill transport, while other festivals add processions and crowds around Durbar Square and Pashupatinath.
- Start before 9am to beat traffic and tour buses.
- Keep every entry ticket; some sites let you return the same day.
- Carry a light layer: mornings are cool even in the warm months.
- Do not plan a valley day trip on your international departure day.
Questions people ask
How many days do you need in Kathmandu?
Three full days covers Durbar Square, Swayambhunath, Boudhanath, Pashupatinath and one valley town. Two days works if you are heading to a trek. One day is enough only for the central three sights.
What can I see in Kathmandu in one day?
Durbar Square in the morning, Swayambhunath in the early afternoon and Boudhanath at sunset, with taxis between them. Skip Patan and Bhaktapur; there is no time to do them properly.
What is a good 3-day itinerary for Kathmandu?
Day 1 Durbar Square, Thamel and Swayambhunath. Day 2 Pashupatinath and Patan. Day 3 Boudhanath and Bhaktapur, or a slower Patan and Thamel day if you fly out the next morning.
Is two days in Kathmandu enough?
Yes for the main sites if you move in the mornings and use taxis. You will have to choose between Patan and Bhaktapur rather than seeing both.
Should I stay in Thamel or Patan?
Thamel is central for shops, food and transport. Patan is quieter, close to its own Durbar Square and about 30 minutes from Thamel by taxi. Boudhanath suits travellers who want a calm base near the stupa.
When is the best time to visit Kathmandu?
October to November and March to April give the clearest skies. December to February is cold and hazier, and the monsoon months from June to September bring rain and flight delays.
