Month by month
Nepal has three practical seasons for visitors: the clear post-monsoon autumn, the spring trekking window, and the monsoon. Winter sits between autumn and spring and works for everything except high passes.

Where to go in each season
The country splits into four weather zones, and the best month for one is not the best for another. Kathmandu valley is at its clearest in October and November; spring brings dust and smoke haze that hides the mountains even on sunny days. Pokhara and the middle hills are good from October to December and again in February and March, but Pokhara is one of the wettest towns in Nepal during the monsoon.
The Terai lowlands — Chitwan, Lumbini, Bardia — are best in November and February, with fog on winter mornings and temperatures near 40 °C in May. Chitwan's grass is cut in January and February, which is when rhino sightings are easiest. High Himalaya treks have two seasons: spring (rhododendrons, some haze) and autumn (clearest skies, crowded trails). High passes close with snow from December to February.
The monsoon exception is the rain-shadow belt: Upper Mustang and Dolpo sit behind the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges and stay dry enough to trek in June–September.

Cost and crowds by season
October and November are the most expensive months: lodges on the Everest and Annapurna routes fill, domestic flights to Lukla and Pokhara sell out, and prices for rooms and guides peak. April is the second high season, driven by spring treks and Everest expeditions. Book transport and lodges weeks ahead for these windows.
The cheapest months are the monsoon (June–September) and mid-January to February. Rooms are discounted, trails are quiet, and you can often decide your trek day by day. The trade-off is rain, cloud and landslide risk in summer, and cold at altitude in winter. Mid-season months — March, May, September and December — sit between the two.
Festivals move demand more than weather does. Dashain and Tihar are the biggest travel peaks of the year: buses and flights are full at the start and end, and many offices and shops close for the main days. Dates shift with the lunar calendar, so confirm them before booking.

Practical notes
Trekking permits, TIMS cards and national park fees are separate from your visa and are checked on the trail; arrange them in Kathmandu or Pokhara before you leave. Domestic flights, especially to Lukla, are the most weather-sensitive part of any itinerary — build in a buffer day at each end in the shoulder months.
Altitude is the other variable that does not care about the season. Ascend slowly, take a rest day on longer treks, and treat headache with vomiting or breathlessness at rest as a reason to descend. Travel insurance that covers helicopter evacuation at your maximum altitude is worth arranging before you fly.
