Taxi and hotel pickup

The prepaid counter sits in the arrivals hall, before you step outside. You state your destination, pay in NPR, and get a receipt to give the driver. This removes the main friction at KTM: street drivers rarely use meters and will quote a tourist rate. If you do take a street taxi, agree the total fare and any luggage charge before the bags go in the boot.

Hotel pickup costs more but solves two problems at once — someone meets you with a name board, and the driver already knows the lane your guesthouse sits on. Thamel's side streets are narrow and many are unsigned, which is where a first arrival usually goes wrong.

Tipping is not required. Rounding up to the next NPR 100 is normal, and NPR 100–200 is a reasonable gesture for help with bags.

Public bus and tempo

Local buses and tempos run from the airport road towards Ratna Park and the city core for a few tens of rupees. They are genuinely cheap and genuinely slow: no luggage space, frequent stops, and a walk at the end with your bags. For a first arrival after a long flight, the saving is not worth it.

If you are on a tight budget and travelling light, ask at your guesthouse which route currently serves the airport road — services change and there is no single official airport bus line to rely on.

Timing and traffic

Six kilometres is not the issue; the valley's traffic is. Allow 60 minutes for any appointment you cannot miss, and 90 minutes in the evening peak or during festival season. Monsoon rain floods parts of the ring road and can double the trip.

Saturday is Nepal's weekly holiday and roads are noticeably quieter in the morning. Strikes (bandh) can shut roads at short notice — if one is called, stay put and ask your hotel to rearrange the transfer.

Tips for arrival

Change a small amount of money at the airport for the fare, then use exchange offices or ATMs in Thamel for better rates. Buy a local SIM or set up an eSIM before you land so an app taxi is an option.

Keep the address of your guesthouse in Nepali script if you can — many drivers read Nepali more easily than English street names. And if you land after dark, book the pickup: it is the one arrival where paying extra genuinely buys certainty.
