Kataragama

Half a day to see the temple complex, or one night if you add a Yala safari. Skip the July–August festival unless you have accommodation booked months ahead.

Kataragama is a pilgrimage town sacred to Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and the Vedda people. Most travellers stop here on the way to Yala National Park or Tissamaharama. The temple complex is the main draw; outside festival season the town is quiet and you can see the main sights in a few hours.

Rules in force · 5
  • South Asia ↗Trekking regions, border districts and several Indian states need separate permits on top of the visa; check the permit before you book transport into them.
  • South Asia ↗Remove shoes (and in many Jain and Hindu temples, leather) before entering; cover shoulders and legs; ask before photographing people or rituals.
  • Sri Lanka ↗Apply for the Electronic Travel Authorisation only on the official government ETA site; lookalike sites charge extra, and the rules and fees change.
  • Sri Lanka ↗At temples cover shoulders and knees, take off shoes and hats, and never pose with your back to a Buddha statue; Buddha images on clothes or tattoos cause offence.
  • Sri Lanka ↗Carry Sri Lankan rupees in small notes; tuk-tuks, buses and small shops are cash-only, and ATMs are fewer outside the cities.

Watch out

Safety

Kataragama is safe for tourists. The main concerns are heat, pushy vendors at the temple and limited medical facilities; carry water and sun protection.
  • The Kataragama festival in July–August fills every room; book months ahead or avoid.
  • Temple dress code: cover shoulders and knees; remove shoes before entering.
  • Puja stalls outside the temple are part of the experience but can be pushy; a polite 'no' works.
  • Last bus to Tissamaharama leaves around 18:00; check the schedule if you are not staying overnight.
