Kataragama
Half a day to see the temple complex, or one night if you add a Yala safari. Skip the July–August festival unless you have accommodation booked months ahead.
Kataragama is a pilgrimage town sacred to Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and the Vedda people. Most travellers stop here on the way to Yala National Park or Tissamaharama. The temple complex is the main draw; outside festival season the town is quiet and you can see the main sights in a few hours.

Scams and watch-outs

- Temple dress code: cover shoulders and knees; remove shoes before entering.
- Puja stalls outside the temple are part of the experience but can be pushy; a polite 'no' works.
- Last bus to Tissamaharama leaves around 18:00; check the schedule if you are not staying overnight.
Kataragama is safe for tourists. The main concerns are heat, pushy vendors at the temple and limited medical facilities; carry water and sun protection.
