Kaafu
Base in Kaafu only if you want a short speedboat hop from the airport; seaplane atolls need more nights to justify.

- South Asia ↗Trekking regions, border districts and several Indian states need separate permits on top of the visa; check the permit before you book transport into them.
- South Asia ↗Remove shoes (and in many Jain and Hindu temples, leather) before entering; cover shoulders and legs; ask before photographing people or rituals.
- Maldives ↗Seaplane transfers fly in daylight only, and the last departure is set by sunset for that day; a late landing at Velana usually means a night on land and the seaplane next morning.
- Maldives ↗Local islands follow Islamic norms: alcohol is not sold, cover shoulders and knees in the village, and swimwear is for the designated tourist beach only.
- Maldives ↗Submit the online Traveller Declaration within 96 hours before arrival; airlines and immigration ask for the confirmation.
Kaafu wraps the capital and the airport: North and South Malé Atoll plus the outlying islands of Kaashidhoo and Gaafaru. It holds the country's densest resort belt and its busiest local-island guesthouse scene, so transfers are short — usually under an hour by speedboat, about 15 minutes by seaplane. That convenience is the trade: house reefs vary, and the atoll is more developed than Ari, Baa or the far south. Stay here for a 3–5 night trip, a late arrival or a first Maldives visit; go further out when diving or a specific marine season is the point.

- Kaafu is the most built-up atoll in the Maldives: pick your island for its house reef, not for the atoll name.
- Seaplane transfers stop in the evening and in poor visibility; a same-day connection after a late landing is not guaranteed.
- Local islands are dry and Friday midday prayers close shops and can pause ferry services.

Kaafu sits close to the airport, so short trips can dodge the worst of a wet week; peak season (Dec–Apr) is also when beds and seaplane slots fill first.

Regional passes
Resort speedboat transfer
buyStandard for Kaafu resorts; priced per person each way and often bundled into a package. Confirm whether it is included before booking.
Seaplane transfer
checkFast and scenic but daylight-only and weather-dependent; usually only worth it for resorts far from the airport.
Public ferry (MTCC)
buyCheapest way between Malé and local islands such as Maafushi; limited departures, no Friday service on some routes.
Scheduled speedboat (local islands)
checkFaster and more frequent than the ferry; prices and timetables change, so check with your guesthouse.
