Getting around Jamaica: trains, buses, driving and domestic flights

Match the mode to the trip you booked, not to the cheapest fare. A single north-coast base plus one Kingston leg is coach and transfer territory. A two-week loop through Treasure Beach, the Blue Mountains and the north coast needs a car.

Prices below are 2026 estimates in Jamaican dollars unless marked US. Coach and taxi fares move with fuel costs, so confirm when you book.

Knutsford Express is the default for visitors moving between towns: air-conditioned, with reserved seats, and terminals in town centres rather than at resorts. Booking ahead is wise on popular days — check current deadlines and luggage rules when you book. It does not stop at hotel gates, so budget a taxi at each end.

Route taxis and coaster buses are how most Jamaicans travel and cost a fraction of a transfer. They are shared, they fill up before leaving, and drivers move fast. Look for red PPV plates — these are the licensed public passenger vehicles. Avoid them after dark.

In Kingston, JUTC buses cover the capital cheaply (about JMD 100–200 — check) but routes and change are confusing on a first visit. Use taxis or a hotel driver at night.

Jamaica drives on the left. If you have never done it, the first hour out of Montego Bay is not the place to learn. Roads are narrow and potholed in stretches, and overtaking on blind corners happens. Drive in daylight and expect goats, pedestrians and stalled trucks around bends.

Rental cars run about US$50–90 a day plus insurance; check what your credit card or travel policy actually covers before you decline the counter insurance. Toll highways take cards or cash — check at the booth. Carry your licence and rental papers for police checks.

A car pays off on the south coast (Treasure Beach, Black River) and in the Blue Mountains foothills, where buses are slow and taxis scarce. It is a liability in Kingston traffic and unnecessary if you are staying in one resort town.

There is no scheduled passenger train service in Jamaica — check locally before relying on rail; the old lines carry freight. For Kingston–Montego Bay, a charter flight takes about 40 minutes against four hours by road, but scheduled seats are scarce and cost US$200+ per seat — check. It makes sense only if you are losing a working day otherwise.

The main gateways are Sangster International (MBJ) at Montego Bay, about 1.5 hours from Negril and Ocho Rios, and Norman Manley International (KIN) at Kingston, about 30 minutes from New Kingston. Both are operating again after Hurricane Melissa; confirm your transfer before you land.

Sunday is quiet outside resorts: many shops close and coach seats may sell out earlier — check timetables. Government offices shut on public holidays. Jerk stands and markets are busiest after 18:00, which is also when you least want to be walking unlit roads.

Tap water is treated in cities and resorts, but in parishes still affected by Hurricane Melissa in 2026, drink bottled water only. Carry tissue for toilets at attractions and roadside stops.

Tipping drivers and guides runs 10–15%, or US$5–10 for a tour. Some all-inclusives forbid tipping and others expect it — check with your hotel. Keep a few small US notes for drivers.
