Step by step
Decide whether you actually need a car. If your trip is Negril, Montego Bay or Ocho Rios plus airport transfers, you do not. If you want Treasure Beach, the Blue Mountains foothills, or to stop where you like along the coast, a car pays for itself in a day or two.
Book before you arrive in high season. December to April is the busy window, and automatic small SUVs go first. Airport desks at Montego Bay and Kingston are convenient but pricier than town offices; a local company may undercut the international brands. Confirm whether the quoted rate includes the mandatory insurance and the licence fee, because the counter total is often higher than the online price.
