The Inner East Bay is the flat, dense strip of cities on the east shore of San Francisco Bay, from Richmond down through Oakland, Alameda, San Leandro, Hayward and Fremont. Every BART line in the system runs through it, so you can sleep in one city and reach the rest in 10–40 minutes. Sleep in Oakland for food, music and the biggest choice of rooms, or Berkeley for the university and walkable blocks. Rent a car only for the hill parks, the wine country or a run south.

Driving I-80/I-580/I-880 in Oakland ("the Maze") and I-880 at San Leandro is the local accident hotspot — take BART at rush hour.
Richmond has high rates of violent crime; check current conditions and stay in busy areas after dark.
