Indonesia in May: what to expect

May is the handover month. The northwest monsoon that soaked Bali, Java and Nusa Tenggara from November is fading, and the dry southeast monsoon is settling in. In practice that means warm, humid days with a shrinking chance of a heavy afternoon or evening shower — most likely in the first half of the month, least likely in the last.

Temperatures barely move across the year in Indonesia; what changes is rain. Coastal Bali, Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Lombok stay warm and humid day and night, while the highlands are cooler: Ubud, Bedugul and the Bromo and Ijen crater rims are cold before dawn, so a jacket matters for sunrise trips. Exact figures vary by zone — check a forecast before you pack. Humidity stays high, so plan outdoor sightseeing for the morning.

Elsewhere the picture is different. Sumatra is wet for much of the year and May is a mixed month there. Sulawesi and Maluku are in a good window in May, and Raja Ampat in Papua is at the tail end of its best season, which runs roughly October to April. If your trip is Raja Ampat rather than Bali, May is a transition month — check conditions before booking long boat transfers.

May is the last comfortable month before the June–August wave. Australian school holidays start in late June, European summer follows, and from July Bali and the Gili islands sell out. In May, crowds and prices sit at medium shoulder-season levels, below the June–July peak.

Expect shoulder-season rates rather than peak pricing on Bali hotels, villas and tours. Domestic flights and holiday-period demand can shift week to week, so compare fares by date before you commit (check).

Two things worth booking ahead anyway: Komodo National Park boat trips out of Labuan Bajo, where permits and boats are limited, and Bromo sunrise jeep packages, which are capacity-constrained on weekends.

Indonesia's May calendar is dominated by moving religious holidays, so exact dates change every year — check the year's dates before you book. Waisak, the Buddhist celebration of the Buddha's birth, enlightenment and death, is marked with a procession and lantern release at Borobudur in Central Java. It usually falls in May or early June and draws pilgrims from across the region; expect crowds at the temple and higher hotel rates in Yogyakarta and Magelang.

Idul Adha, the Islamic festival of sacrifice, also moves each year and can land in May or June. It is a public holiday with morning prayers and family gatherings rather than a tourist event, but it triggers a short domestic travel peak: trains, flights and roads fill for a few days, and some businesses close or run shorter hours.

Beyond the holidays, May is a good month for Bali's temple calendar and for the quieter end of the festival season in Java. Galungan and Kuningan, Bali's biggest recurring ceremony, fall roughly every six months and can land in May or June — check the Balinese calendar, because roads around temples get busy and some shops shut.

May favours the Bali–Java–Nusa Tenggara arc. On Bali, Ubud's rice terraces are green and the dry-season light is good for the Campuhan ridge and Tegallalang; the south coast beaches at Kuta, Seminyak and Sanur are usable, though expect some afternoon cloud. Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan are reachable, but the crossing can still be rough early in the month.

In Java, May is one of the better months for Bromo and Ijen, with clearer mornings more likely than in the wet season and a manageable pre-dawn cold if you bring layers. Yogyakarta works well for Borobudur and Prambanan, though Waisak crowds the Borobudur area. Jakarta is hot and humid but drier than in the wet months; it is a city stop, not a highlight.

For wildlife and diving, head east. Komodo and Labuan Bajo sit at the start of the dry season, so sea conditions are variable rather than reliably calm — check with operators before booking crossings and dive days. Sulawesi offers Toraja's highland culture and Bunaken's reefs. If you want Raja Ampat, May is the shoulder between its best season and the wetter months — go only if you have checked conditions and boat schedules.

Pack for heat and humidity with a layer for altitude. Light, quick-drying clothes for the coast and cities; a fleece or light down jacket plus long trousers for Bromo, Ijen and any volcano sunrise, where pre-dawn temperatures drop sharply. A rain shell is worth carrying in the first half of May even as the dry season starts.

For temples, bring a sarong or a light scarf to cover shoulders and knees — many sites lend or rent one, but having your own is easier. Reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent, a refillable water bottle and a universal adapter (Indonesia uses 230 V, type C and F plugs) cover most needs. Bring cash for small warungs and park fees; ATMs exist in tourist areas but are less reliable in remote ones.

April is the tail of the rainy season: greener, cheaper and quieter, with more afternoon rain and rougher seas to the Gilis and Komodo. It is a good month for Bali and Java if you accept showers, and a weaker one for Komodo.

June is drier and busier, with Australian school holidays starting to fill Bali and prices climbing. July is peak season: Bali and the Gili islands sell out, so book early. If you want dry weather without the crowds, September is the site's pick as the sweet spot — May leans greener and cheaper, September leans drier and calmer at sea.
